L’AQUILA – “The “strange case” of the disappearance of RU486” writes the FuoriGenere association which explains. “In May 2023, the San Salvatore hospital in L’Aquila started the supply service of RU486, the abortive drug which, according to WHO guidelines, allows the voluntary interruption of pharmacological pregnancy up to the 12th week of pregnancy, without therefore resort to surgery. Unfortunately, however, this service, which is to all intents and purposes a medical practice, was interrupted in January 2024, among other things without any communication to citizens, contrary to what was done to announce its implementation. Why this sudden decision?”

“This is a “strange case” which, as a transfeminist collective present for years in the L’Aquila area, we cannot leave silent. We ask the ASL management and those responsible to provide the reasons that led to the interruption of the service. Furthermore, in our city, not even the clinics (furthermore few compared to those provided for by law 405/75) guarantee this medical practice.”

“The direct consequence of this right denied in L’Aquila is that every woman or individual with a uterus who wants to terminate her pregnancy must go to Avezzano, the closest office to guarantee this service. Hijacking a hospital service tens of kilometers away from one’s home means forcing every woman or individual with a uterus to travel to undergo at least four appointments in the ward with an enormous waste of time, resources and money. We would really like to free ourselves from the doubt of being faced with yet another change of guard that winks at anti-abortionists, the church and the government by playing dirty on our skin, especially in a historical moment in which an amendment has been approved that finances with funds public the entry of anti-abortion associations into the clinics.”

“We demand a clear and exhaustive response and the restoration of service for all people who pass through social and healthcare facilities. We also demand that the latter are secular, free and allow you to choose maternity, parenthood, abortion or when to have children by contraception.”
