The very thin thread of hope broke shortly after the arrival in the emergency room at Brescia hospital. There was no long-hoped-for miracle capable of saving Sofia, the one and a half year old girl who was hit in Brescia while she was with her grandmother outside the nursery.
It was a matter of a fraction of a second. A maneuver at very low speed inside a car park. Perhaps due to the sun, perhaps due to the automatic transmission of the car involved. So around 4pm the tragedy occurred in the private car park of Little England, the private school complex in the city of Brescia which hosts nursery, nursery and primary school.
The grandmother of a first grader was the one who hit the little girl who was moving from one parking space to another. The little girl fell to the ground hitting her head. Rescue was immediate with the doctors who intervened and resuscitated her child who had gone into cardiac arrest on the spot. Then transport to the pediatric emergency room of the Civil Hospitals. Where, however, little Sofia did not survive. The grandmother was in shock and with some suspected fractures and was also hospitalized. The accident occurred during the peak time for children to leave school, some of whom were spectators of the tragedy which they witnessed from very close quarters.
“It’s an absurd tragedy” comment the school managers while the local police of Brescia carry out the investigations. «My wife was screaming, she was in shock. I arrived and saw the little girl on the ground »says the husband of the woman who hit her little girl. «It’s a huge drama. I don’t know anything about dynamics, we will see the cameras and read the police reports but what matters is what happened. And it’s a tragedy” adds the man. The news circulated in a very short time among the school classrooms. Disbelief and pain took over. The teachers tried in every way to protect the little students, as well as parents, grandparents and babysitters who were in the same car park that was the scene of the tragedy.
The school has already sent an email to families to announce a project for the psychological protection of children and a process that will begin in the next few days.
