The long letter to his majority to support him. There are still a few hours left to find out what he wrote Giovanni Totipresident of the Liguria Region suspended from his duties and under house arrest for corruption and vote-swapping, in that letter entrusted to the very faithful councilor Giampedrone who, thanks to the authorization expressed by the prosecutor’s office, was able to meet him in the house in Ameglia. The letter will be read in the regional council tomorrow before the opposition (Pd, M5s, Lista Sansa and Linea Condivisa) can move on to illustrate the motion of no confidence filed a few days ago. He will read it Alessandro Bozzano, group leader of the Toti List in the regional council.

Giovanni Toti, the motion of no confidence and the letter to the majority

The letter, as far as possible, contains the exhortation to move forward with Piana’s interim order so as not to block any of those projects – the dam, the spillway, the sub-port tunnel, to name a few – which Toti has always defined as essential to the economy of Liguria and not only. Then, after claiming “the public interest in all my choices”Toti says he is “certain that the majority of Ligurians understand and appreciate the path taken and the results achieved by our government” and recalls that he “immediately made himself available to the magistrates to clarify all the aspects of the matter”.

Toti then asked Giampedrone to reject the motion of no confidence that will be presented by the opposition, a motion which – according to the numbers present in the Regional Council – should be neutralised: even considering possible surprises, the 12 opposition councilors would find themselves facing the 18 majority votes against.

Toti, the president of Liguria under house arrest, does not resign

A motion of no confidence with which, Toti writes in the letter, the opposition is attempting a “political push” four days before the European elections. The document is long, but Toti does not shy away from thanking all the local and national leaders «who have expressed their position in my defense without hesitation. One above all, Matteo Salvini» came to Genoa to lay the first caisson of the breakwater. No resignation therefore but a political claim made out of pride by Toti, who does not spare those who have spoken too tepidly in his defense and an invective towards “the left” who “want to attempt a breakthrough action”.

No resignation therefore, even less now that he is under house arrest. “If he chooses otherwise, he will do so as a free man,” say his supporters. Meanwhile, the investigations continue. The investigating judge Faggioni today denied house arrest to Paolo Emilio Signorinidetained in Genoa prison for corruption since 7 May in the investigation which led to president Toti, as well as the entrepreneur Aldo Spinelli, under house arrest. Prosecutors Federico Manotti and Luca Monteverde also gave a negative opinion. Signorini had availed himself of the right not to answer before the investigating judge and then asked to be heard by the prosecutors. According to investigating judge Faggioni, the “precautionary needs are unchanged” and the risk of “pollution of evidence and the danger of repetition of the crime” persists.
