At work from today at Palazzo d’Orléans, in Palermo, the special office for energy valorisation and management of the waste cycle in the Sicilian Region, established with a resolution of the regional council last March. This morning the first six members took office, including four specialized technical officials hired as part of the competition for generational turnover. The workforce is, however, destined to increase as a result of an internal request in order to reach the 14 total units expected. The Sicilian Region says so.

The office, which will operate over the next two years, is led on an interim basis by the engineer and regional manager Salvatore Cocina and is divided into an intermediate structure directed by the lawyer Gianluigi Amico. Its task is to support the activity of the extraordinary commissioner, the president of the Region, and accelerate the procedures for the completion of the integrated plant network of the waste management system for the construction of the new waste-to-energy plants.

Furthermore, it will be responsible for implementing all the procedural steps necessary for issuing ordinances authorizing projects for new public waste management plants. The functioning of the structure is guaranteed by regional finance resources.
