Renewables: RWE will build a new 53 MW wind farm in Puglia

After starting the construction of the San Severo Wind Farm at the end of 2023, RWE has started work on another onshore wind farm in Puglia: Mondonuovo, located in the Municipalities of Mesagne and Brindisi, in the Province of Brindisi. In total, an average of 150 colleagues from RWE and experts from service companies will be involved in the construction of the plant where nine 5.9 megawatt (MW) turbines will be installed. The plant, with a total capacity of 53 megawatts (MW), is expected to come into operation in 2025.

Paolo Raia, Country Chair RWE Renewables Italia: “We are building two major onshore wind farms with 21 latest generation turbines in Italy, one of our key markets. After entry into operation, Mondonuovo and San Severo will be able to ensure the supply of green energy to approximately 110,000 families. These projects will contribute to achieving RWE’s ambitious climate objectives – Net Zero by 2040 – and to supporting the growth objectives set for the country by 2030, making a tangible contribution to decarbonisation and the improvement of national energy security.”

In the first construction phase, the access roads to the site will be adapted and the areas for the assembly of the cranes will be created. The works will continue with the construction of the foundations, up to 20 meters wide, and then proceed with the installation of the turbines. To transport the rotor blades, RWE uses a special technology called “blade lifter”, which allows them to be lifted and guided through narrow curves and alleys. RWE has already used this technology in the construction of the Selinus Wind Farm in Sicily, thus avoiding the felling of trees.

RWE Renewables Italia – strong presence in the Italian renewables market
RWE, a world leader in renewable energy, takes an integrated project approach that includes the development, construction and operation, as well as the marketing of wind farms and solar plants. RWE is a key player in the Italian renewables market.

The company leverages its vast experience to advance its business in Italy and currently operates 15 onshore wind farms with an installed capacity of approximately 500 MW in the country. With its onshore fleet, RWE supplies green electricity to around 400,000 Italian families every year. After the entry into operation of the San Severo and Mondonuovo projects in Puglia, RWE will produce enough electricity from onshore wind to provide green energy to more than 500,000 families in Italy. RWE is also currently building its first photovoltaic plant in Italy: Bosco, located in Sicily.
