in memory of Pinto, the teacher who died in the Piazza della Loggia massacre

Today, fifty years after the fascist massacre in Piazza della Loggia in Brescia, Luigi Pinto, a teacher from Foggia and militant of Avanguardia Operai and the CGIL Scuola, who lost his life at the age of 25, was commemorated. This moment of remembrance was the penultimate event of a series of commemorative initiatives organized by the Chamber of Labor of Foggia, Flc Cgil of Capitanata, Anpi and provincial Arci, with the support of the Municipality and the Province and the Monti Uniti Foundation. The event kicked off on May 27th with the opening of the photographic exhibition “Luigi Pinto, a story through images” and will end this evening with the theater show “Gino” produced by the Teatro della Polvere.

“We paid homage to this comrade and to all those who fought to defend anti-fascism, so that their sacrifice may never be forgotten. It is our duty to protect and implement the values of our Constitution every day. We are here today to honor the memory of Luigi Pinto and those who gave their lives to defend democracy and rights. We must keep collective memory alive, because without memory there is no future”, declared Giuseppe Ciuffreda, general secretary of Flc CGIL Foggia, during the laying of the wreath at the monument.

Luigi Pinto lost his life on 1 June 1974, five days after a bomb exploded during a demonstration in Piazza della Loggia. Together with eight other dead and over 100 injured, Pinto was taking part in the protest called by the Permanent Anti-Fascist Committee. His funeral was held on 4 June in Foggia, with an extraordinary participation of the community.
