Aluminum recycling, Italy first in Europe

The concepts of sustainability and of circular economy they have now become part of our vocabulary and, fortunately, also of our daily lives. Recycling is certainly less convenient for us consumers than when our waste once ended up unsorted in the garbage, but in the end the results are clearly visible, given that when we talk about aluminum recycling the key word is excellence.

The CIALa non-profit National Consortium which represents the commitment undertaken by producers and users of aluminum and its derivative packaging, as well as by recoverers and recyclers of the latter post-consumer, announces that the 70.3% of the total of being placed on the market and well 93.8% of cans in aluminum for drinks. The EU objectives for 2025 (50%) and 2030 (60%) have therefore been well exceeded for some years now; this means avoid greenhouse emissions equal to 417 thousand tons of CO2 and save energy for over 182 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent.

He declares Carmine Bruno Reapresident of CIAL: “Since its foundation, CIAL has been the spokesperson for an evolved concept of sustainability, capable of stimulating the active cooperation of the various actors involved in the aluminum packaging supply chain. It is a question of circular responsibility which requires everyone to contribute to achieving the general collection and recycling objectives”.

The rules for effective home recycling of aluminium

Recycling aluminum is everyone’s duty, including individual citizens: it is a gesture of great importance in protecting the environment. To do it best, just follow a few simple rules:

Not just cans – In the separate waste collection of aluminium, in addition to the more well-known beverage cans, the following must also be included: trays and tins for food, including those for animal food, spray cans, tubes for creams, preserves and health and cosmetic products, the thin sheet such as chocolate wrapping and kitchen roll, caps, capsules and various closures.

Never alone – Aluminum is (almost) never collected alone but with plastic and/or glass.

Even dirty ones, as long as they are empty – For recycling purposes it is not necessary to rinse or wash aluminum containers. All you need to do is carefully remove any food or product residues inside.

Small but precious – Aluminum is precious, thanks to recycling which allows enormous savings from an energy and environmental point of view. For this reason also its components more small, for example the screw caps of bottles of water, wine, spirits and preserves, or even yogurt jar lids must be collected and recovered.

Compact and ball up – To facilitate the recycling phases, it is always useful to separate aluminum from other materials (remove the cap from the bottle, remove the lid from the yogurt jar). And compact/crumple the smaller, thinner pieces together.

According to the data just released, the results of the CIAL I am of absolute excellence and well above the European average: we can therefore affirm that aluminum today is a strategic partner of the circular economy, not only as an industrial supply chain of the material as an end in itself, but also for its contribution, in new applications or replacements of less “green”, can guarantee to favor this new and irreversible process defined by the policies and legislative projects of the European Parliament. These are numbers that mean less waste, less pollution and, simply put, a better quality of our everyday lives.
