«I’m a man of doing, I don’t tell fairy tales»

Fabrizio Oliva, candidate for mayor of the Spazi Liberi civic list, can being identified as the hotelier who throws himself into politics be penalizing?

«Far from it: I am an entrepreneur and I bring to the city my propensity to do, to achieve concrete things without telling fairy tales. I propose possible interventions, achievable horizons with the aim of not deluding people with unrealizable projects right from their gestation.”

So if your work is an added value, let’s start with tourism.

«In Pesaro, tourism is all there is to do. Let’s say that our city has a tourist vocation but without consequent actions. Starting from the tourist tax which must be used to promote the sector with intelligent choices that do the good of the city. Beautifying the seaside area with new furnishings, making it more welcoming and redeveloping the streets are interventions that have positive effects on the entire community.”

What are the first actions you will take on this front?

«To the west the seafront needs to be completely redone, it is 30 years old. The idea of a greener city should start from here, thinking about a real pedestrianization of Viale Trieste in the summer periods. Cars of non-residents and tourists away from the seafront, creating an exchange car park served by continuous shuttles and not on request. Pedestrianization would make the area more lively and always respecting the rules. In Levante, however, all the lighting needs to be redone, the street furniture renewed and the Genica problem resolved. The failure to receive the blue flag cost us dearly also because the rejection occurred in the year of the Capital of Culture and certainly did not go unnoticed.”

Of course, the problems caused by the Genica torrent in a program like yours must have important answers.

«The issue is complex and must be addressed with diversified interventions. There are certainly no immediate solutions but projects that require time and planning. First of all, we need to limit the amount of water that is poured into the sea. This is possible by creating expansion tanks upstream which minimize, as I said, the spill into the sea but in particular in cases of intense or prolonged rain when the situation worsens. In my plans for Genica there is also coverage of the stream in the urban part. Work that must be carried out in steps but whose effectiveness I have no doubts about.”

You are a hospitality entrepreneur, do you think the needs of hoteliers and managers of public places are compatible?

«I say that the rules are there but the forces to carry out the controls are lacking, which is equivalent to real deregulation. The seaside area must also be kept alive in the evening, because tourists certainly don’t want a dead city. For this reason, however, the places of nightlife must be differentiated. In Viale Trieste and up to Via Napoli the music cannot arrive late at night. Maybe as an exception for some particular event but not every evening. I believe that places like Baia Flaminia, Sottomonte and a part of the port are more suitable for prolonging night music. I don’t intend to cripple the fun of young people and actually I’m also thinking about winter. I am referring to entertainment entrepreneurs who want to invest in the spaces of the first suburbs. Once upon a time there were clubs like the Derby, the Caos or the Arcobaleno that brought young people together around music and dance.”

Once along the seafront and the first suburbs we pass into the historic center.

«The historic center of Pesaro also needs to be revitalized, also considering the diversification of shop opening hours which cannot be closed in the evenings during the summer. It is an opportunity for tourists but also for the people of Pesaro who wait for the evening, after work, to walk and also to shop.”

And the work already contracted for the large containers?

«Those will be a problem because there isn’t the money to complete them and whoever comes after this administration will have to deal with the times and relationships with companies they didn’t choose. But not only. We need to intervene on the Scavolini Auditorium whose fake inauguration does not correspond to its real use. I also think of the Orti Giuli, today a haven for thugs and an emblem of neglect. It is necessary to recover that unfortunate bar structure, perhaps to make it a center for young people.”

You often talk about the role of villages in the tourism economy.

«They are central and must be resuscitated. I’m thinking of a series of incentives for those who open businesses in these places.

Why should the people of Pesaro vote for you?

«Because I am an entrepreneur who doesn’t make promises, doesn’t recite poetry or produce confetti. I am a man of action and I will also be able to loosen the grip of bureaucracy.”
