There is now less than a week left untilElection day. On 8 and 9 June in the Marche region we will vote for the European and local elections in 148 municipalities. The polling stations will be open from 3pm to 11pm on 8 June (Saturday) and from 7am to 11pm on Sunday 9 June. The electoral silence starts at midnight on Friday 7 June.

As regards the consultation for the European elections, Italy will elect 76 members of the European Parliament out of a total of 720. The Marche is part of the Central constituency, also made up of Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria, which will elect 15 parliamentarians. In our country there is preferential voting; voters can indicate, within the same list, from one to three preferences, voting, in the case of two or more preferences, for candidates of different genders. The threshold is 4%. Among the novelties of the electoral round there is the vote for those who are out of office which can be carried out in the place where they are located, without returning to the municipality of residence.

As regards the administrative elections in the Marche, voting takes place in 3 capitals (Ascoli Piceno, Pesaro and Urbino). The possible run-off round will take place on Sunday 23 and Monday 24 June and will only concern municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants if no candidate has obtained more than 50% of the preferences. In municipalities between 5 thousand and 15 thousand inhabitants, mayors will be able to reach the third term, while under 5 thousand the third term limit has been eliminated.

The ‘popables’

Starting from the premise that it is complex for the Marche region to elect a European parliamentarian, and in fact it hasn’t happened for twenty years (the last one was Luciana Sbarbati), it must be said that the candidates who have the greatest chance of arriving in Brussels are those who have visibility that goes beyond regional borders. A larger voter base, than that of the Marche region, is certainly useful for having greater chances.

Without wanting to discourage anyone, it should be noted that what certainly weighs in the balance is the media visibility of the candidates for the European elections even beyond the Marche region. Starting from this criterion in PD among the ‘candidates’ are Matteo Ricci and Alessia Morani. Ricci leaves Pesaro after 10 years on the seat of mayor, a politician who has found space several times in the national media platforms and who, net of everything, if he does not arrive in Brussels in the event of a good result could see his role strengthened in the party .

The same goes for Alessia Morani, already a parliamentarian and involved in industrial crises in central Italy, a basin that could earn her a ticket to Brussels. Furthermore, the two politicians of the Democratic Party could be helped by the presence of national secretary Elly Schlein as the leader of the list.

Among the favourites, Mirco Carloni of the stands out League which can count on an important electoral base, not only in the Marche region, but in Central Italy. His visibility in the Marche derives both from the role of vice president of the Region and as councilor with delegations to economic activities, as well as as a current parliamentarian. Outside the Marche region, the role of president of the Agriculture Commission in the Chamber weighs heavily, which leads him to interact with the world of agriculture, an interesting constituency.

Chance also for Carlo Ciccioli di Brothers of Italy, regional councilor several times and former group leader of Giorgia Meloni’s party. The doctor and politician from the Marche was a member of parliament for the National Alliance and the People of Freedom as well as vice president of the Parliamentary Commission for Social Affairs and Health. The driving force of Prime Minister Meloni may also weigh on his candidacy. For Ciccioli it is also a test case to obtain a councilorship in the event of reconfirmation of the centre-right in the next regional elections.

Among the ‘minor’ parties, those that may have some chances due to the media visibility they have enjoyed in recent years, there are the former parliamentarians of 5 Star MovementMirella Emiliozzi, former deputy in the Conte government and Sergio Romagnoli, former senator in the same government.
