The free sea of Naples begins at “mappatella beach”, at the Rotonda Diaz. An initiative by Green Europe was held today, 1 June, to raise awareness among bathers, citizens and tourists, of the value of defending greenery and the right to blue, to free access to the monster sea. The campaign began in the sandy area of the rotunda because «the “mappatella beach”, – explained Francesco Emilio Borrelli, deputy of the Green-Left Alliance – in addition to being one of the few public beaches in the city still accessible to all, is the symbol of the our battles, for years we have “adopted” it, defending it from scoundrels, abusive people, uncivilized people and negligence”.

«Our multi-year awareness campaign continues – continued Borrelli – to defend the beaches and the sea. It is truly disheartening to note that in 2024 too many smokers are still unable to throw their butts into the bins or store them while waiting to find one. And it is always good to remember that it takes dozens of years to dispose of them. Without forgetting that all too often beaches are reduced to rubbish heaps, it is an uncivilized phenomenon that must be fought and eradicated at all costs.”

«In light of what was the Bolkestein directive – added Nelide Milano, city councilor of the Greens – of what and how the Council of State expressed itself, the importance of public beaches, or the right to access to sea and the guarantee for the citizen of being able to access freely, is a concept that must be forcefully reiterated. This is a symbolic place. It is a symbolic place because it often lends itself to situations of degradation which can only be guaranteed and protected thanks to careful monitoring by the citizen.”

«We are here this morning on the beach of the Mappatella lido – declared Lorenzo Pascucci, councilor of the 1st Municipality – because it is important to give a signal for our seas, for our beaches. Especially with these butt holders. With these we intend to convey a very important message: they serve to prevent smokers from dispersing cigarette butts into our seas and the environment, which, as we know, are among the main causes of pollution. Of the sea as well as of our territories, releasing harmful substances such as nicotine, also contained in the filter”.

Despite the low turnout, also due to the rain, some very young people took part in the campaign. A new day in defense of the sea and the environment has been announced for next Friday. «Our battle continues – concluded Borrelli – and we will fight again for free beaches. We will close the campaign in Naples with two initiatives for next week. The first on “mappatella beach”, symbol of the citizens’ reappropriation of the beaches and the second under the house of the Macor, Camorra members who took over a publicly owned building for 30 years. We want free beaches and cities.”
