Foggia remembers Luigi Pinto, the teacher who died in Piazza della Loggia in Brescia at the hands of the fascists

This morning, fifty years after the fascist massacre in Piazza della Loggia in Brescia, a wreath of flowers was placed near the stars in memory of Luigi Pinto, the Foggia teacher militant of Avanguardia Operazione and of the CGIL Scuola, who lost life at the tender age of 25, the penultimate appointment of the series of commemorative events organized by the Chamber of Labor of Foggia, Flc Cgil of Capitanata, Anpi and Arci provinciale, with the support of the Municipality and Province and of the Fondazione dei Monti Uniti, which began on May 27th with the inauguration of the photographic exhibition ‘Luigi Pinto, a story through images’ and which will culminate this evening with the theater show ‘Gino’ produced by the Teatro della Polvere.

We are here so that the sacrifice of this comrade and of the many who fought to defend the value of anti-fascism is never in vain, also because these reminiscences are still there. We must defend our Constitution, it is our precise duty to implement it every day. This is why we are here today, in front of this monument erected thanks to the will of our companion Loredana Olivieri, who passed away prematurely. We continue our commitment to protecting collective memory, because without memory there is no future” the words Giuseppe Ciuffreda, general secretary of Flc Cgil Foggia.

Luigi Pinto died on June 1, 1974 after five days of agony. He taught in the province of Brescia. On May 28 of that year, with many of his colleagues and hundreds of other workers, he went to Piazza della Loggia to participate in a demonstration called by the Permanent Anti-Fascist Committee. Together with many other people, citizens, democrats, anti-fascists, he was hit by a bomb explosion.

The toll is eight dead and over 100 injured. Pinto’s funeral was held on 4 June in Foggia, with an impressive crowd participation.
