“The story of the attack on the healthcare staff of the ‘Ugo Cariddi’ prison could make us rethink the organization of healthcare in prison”. These are the declarations of the leaders of the provincial health authority of Catanzaro After the attack on the director of the penitentiary medicine service and to prison psychiatrist – to which the ASP expresses “closeness and solidarity” – by a prisoner.
“The care model created in the last year in the Catanzaro prison thanks to the investments of the Company and the Region was intended to respect the national regulations on the subject but above all to combine health protection and certainty of punishment. Inmates with complex pathologies, also coming from other centres, are treated in the prison’s health facility, with results appreciated at a national level both by the Prisoners’ Guarantor and by independent organisations”.
“But the provision of health services has created, in other respects, the paradox of not being appreciated by many inmates receiving care who, in this way, are denied one of the easiest routes to release, as in the case of yesterday’s attack. In recent times, threats to healthcare personnel have increased, which has generated requests for transfer to other locations.
“The Company is inspired by respect for everyone’s right to care guaranteed by the Constitution, but this right must be combined with the safety of operators, which is the responsibility of the management of the detention institutions. In the next few days we will request a meeting with the prison administration to examine critical issues and solutions together.”
