Brindisi: CGIL stain on the workers’ demonstration

Today’s demonstration saw a massive participation of workers who marched in a procession to the Municipality of Brindisi. To the mayor Giuseppe Marchionna, CGIL and UIL expressed their concerns about a very serious crisis in the entire industrial sector of the city. They asked for a strong dialogue with the government and all institutional levels to bring new industrial policies, projects and financing to Brindisi, in order to reassure workers who risk mass dismissal. We are in the presence of an industrial tsunami and demographic desertification. It’s time to invest, to use all possible resources from the Pnrr, the Just Transition Fund and any other available source. We need to build new supply chains to restore employment.

The decarbonisation table must take charge of all the local disputes before it is too late. In addition to the energy sector, the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors are in crisis, so there can no longer be random tables. The time has come to approve projects, allocate funds and provide good work. Our territory must be at the center of the government’s attention.

The dispute is not closed. We will do new initiatives. Whoever comes to speak to us for the next European elections will have to tell us what solutions and what commitment they will put in place for Brindisi. It’s time for concrete and immediate answers.

The event, promoted by CGIL and UIL, highlighted the need for urgent interventions to avoid the collapse of the Brindisi industrial system. Workers are asking for certainties about the future and concrete interventions to safeguard employment and relaunch the local economy.

Antonio Macchia

General secretary of the CGIL of Brindisi.
