We like to remember Carmelo Morreale with this brief biographical note:
Carmelo Morreale was born in Trapani on 14 November 1942. His father, Giuseppe, a building contractor and historic municipal councilor of the Italian social movement, at the age of twenty – he says – found him a job at the tax office. He will be fired after a week, caught tearing up the files of those who didn’t have the money to pay for them. In 1968 he reached Rome and then Milan to indulge his extraordinary vocation for painting. Here he joined the gallery owner Schettini’s group. These were years of great success and appreciation. He undergoes and reworks the influences of great artists such as Burri, Fontana, Morandi. The explosion of the figurative in the Milanese market caught him unprepared. He returns to Trapani after almost a decade. Here to protest against an asphyxiated market dedicated more to negotiations on the price of canvases than to their value, in 1975 he made a bonfire of his paintings in a square in Trapani. From this moment the protest becomes stronger and more critical. And his works are increasingly beautiful and warm. He takes up a bohemian life, trading canvases for basic necessities and clothes. Trapani becomes the scene of his art, the setting and vision of an unparalleled artistic installation, adorned with irreverent mockery and fantastic visions.
