Quality of life by age group: in Umbria children are better off than everyone else

In Umbria children are better off than young and old. The latest survey by Il Sole 24 Ore should probably be summarized this way which, in Monday’s edition, published the three rankings of Italian provincial capitals for quality of life based on the three age groups. Each ranking was developed taking 12 indicators into consideration.

In particular, in the rankings on the well-being that the company is able to offer to under 14s, Perugia places 32nd and Terni 39th. The results were processed taking into account school gardens (m2 per child aged 0-14 in the capital municipality); of living spaces (average square meters per inhabitant in the residential sector); the share of children who used municipal services; of equipped greenery (m2 per child 0-14 years in the capital municipality); and the sports and children index (practitioners, schools and results). And also the number of pediatricians (active professionals per thousand resident inhabitants 0-14); the percentage of children with inadequate numerical and alphabetic competence; school buildings with gymnasium; of social spending for families and minors (euros for each inhabitant under 18); of Pnrr projects for education; and, finally, the number of crimes against minors.

As regards young people, however, despite the presence of two universities, Perugia does worse than Terni, with the regional capital ranking in 47th place and the Conca in 36th. In this case, the indicators that the economic newspaper took into account are the trend of young residents (percentage change in residents aged 18.35 years 2024/2023); the nuptiality quotient (wedding celebrated per thousand inhabitants); the average age at childbirth; graduates (as a percentage of the population aged 25-39); unemployment among young people (as a percentage of the population aged 15-34); permanent transformations (contractual changes per thousand inhabitants); youth entrepreneurship (businesses with owners under 35 as a percentage of registered businesses); rent in a semi-central area (percentage impact on average income); sports areas (m2 per resident aged 18-35); bars and discos (every 10 thousand residents aged 18-35); concerts (shows every 10 thousand inhabitants aged 18-35); and municipal administrators under 40.

Finally, despite an increasingly elderly population in Umbria, the quality of life for those over sixty-five is not among the best. Perugia, in fact, comes in 44th place and Terni even in 85th. In this case the indicators examined by Il Sole 24 Ore are: elderly single people (percentage of population over 65); users of municipal social services (percentage of the population over 65); consumption of drugs for chronic diseases (minimum units sold per capita); consumption of medications for depression (minimum units sold per capita); geriatricians (every 10 thousand over 65 years); nurses (every 10 thousand inhabitants aged 15 and over); beds in RSAs (every thousand over 65s); exposed to noise pollution (of citizens per 100 thousand inhabitants); civil participation over 50 (non-profit employees aged 50 and over for every thousand residents of the same age); libraries (every 10 thousand residents aged 65 and over); urban gardens (m2 per resident aged 65 and over in the capital municipality)
