In a packed room in Palermo with representatives of the world of fishing, Alfonso Alaimo (in the photo), regional coordinator for Sicily of Alternativa Popolare and candidate in the next European elections on 8 and 9 June, launched a heartfelt appeal to vote. Alaimo expressed respect for the fishing sector, declaring “that he had listened in depth for the first time to the problems that afflict this important Sicilian economic reality”.

During his speech, Alaimo explained that Alternativa Popolare, “despite being a party of modest size, is extremely determined and combative”. Formally affiliated to the European People’s Party, of Christian Democratic and conservative inspiration, Popular Alternative embraces some conservative principles, without however being against ecology. Alaimo underlined that the party supports a “reasoned” ecology, not influenced by preconceived ideologies”.
Alaimo criticized “the lack of adequate representation of Italian interests in Europe, despite Italy sending 75 MEPs out of a total of 705. This political deficit, according to Alaimo, “hinders the ability to effectively address crucial problems such as fishing restrictions of cod, which have a negative impact on the local economy”.
The objective of Alternativa Popolare is to bring to Europe representatives capable of giving voice to the “secretariat of Italy”, worthily defending national interests. Addressing those present, Alaimo concluded his speech by appealing to “vote for change and for the future of young people, tired of having to emigrate due to lack of opportunities in Sicily, representing a credible alternative to the parties that have governed until now, promising a concrete commitment to improve the socio-economic conditions of the region and the country”.
