It took place on Saturday evening, at the Cinema Don Bosco Theatre of Caserta, the 26th Prize Review-CompetitionDon Rua” reserved for Polyphonic and parish choirsparticipants in the event “Mayfest 2024“.

Numerous prizes are up for grabs, including the special prize “Targa Priest Don L’Arco” (Salesian Work) and the special prize “Diocese of Caserta Youth Ministry”.

Twelve choirs performed on stage, also coming from outside the region: in addition to Caserta, Dragoni, Naples, Torre del Greco, Salerno, Torre Annunziata, Portici, also Veroli (FR) and Avezzano (AQ).

Both the youth choirs and those made up of adults aroused great interest and appreciation from the large audience present in the room, for the composure in the scenic presentation, the choice of pieces and the exciting performance.

A round of applause to all the choir directors who, as we know, carry out both an educational and professional function, at a school or amateur level, guaranteeing with their preparation perfect success in assembling the voices.

Polyphonic choirs have odd voices, that is, the various sections (sopranos, contraltos, tenors and basses) blend together and compete with musical and rhythmic passages that are sometimes of considerable difficulty and a choirmaster must be able to grasp the differences and peculiarities of valuing each one in the group.

The pieces presented ranged from the religious to the profane, passing through harmonizations and arrangements, gospel and author songs, villanelles and Neapolitan songs, especially a cappella, truly surprising: sound, vocal and instrumental games, captured by the expressive genius of the gestures typical of choir directors.

The a cappella performance of many ensembles present at the event highlighted how the tonal, chromatic and dynamic passages (in the volume dimension) can create the illusion of listening to an orchestra, that is, as if the voices were instruments and the ear could perceive the most subtle nuances; even just a few voices, in a well-concerted and curated ensemble, in a choir amplify the effect of the sounds and give the piece an excellent quality, combined with the dedication in participation in rehearsals and in the study that each individual dedicates to this art.

The prizes awarded enhanced the characteristic aspects of choral singing: execution, interpretation, program, originality, organization, professionalism, polyphony and chorality.
