REGGIO EMILIAMarco De Paolis is the military prosecutor which resulted in 57 perpetrators of various crimes being sentenced to life imprisonment massacres Nazi crimes committed in Italy between 1943 and 1945, including those of Sant’Anna di Stazzema, Marzabotto and Cervarolo.

“We are forced to use the term ex-Nazis, in reality after meeting them I met people who continued to believe in the negative values ​​of the culture of violence and oppression”, explains De Paolis.

In ‘Nazi Hunt’ published by Rizzoli, De Paolis recounts a work that began in 2002 and lasted 15 years which redeemed the omissions and delays symbolized by the so-called ‘cabinet of shame’ of the military prosecutor’s office in Rome where, in 1994, important files on the massacres: “I think we can accept the historians’ thesis, which sees the reason for this unacceptable delay in the so-called raison d’état of the time.”

In the Hall of Mirrors of the Valli Theatre, as a guest of Istoreco, De Paolis recalled in particular the trial for the Cervarolo massacre of 20 March 1944, with 24 civilian victims, for which two Nazi soldiers were sentenced to life imprisonment. “It was one of the many touching moments of my judicial activity, we touch the abyss of the crime and the height of the humanity of the injured people. A pain that accompanies family members and survivors throughout their lives.”
