“Until today, in 2024 the main activities carried out by the flying team relating to Code Red they concern 19 precautionary measures carried out and 4 imprisonment orders, therefore people who have been definitively convicted of crimes of gender violence, found guilty without the possibility of appeal. Regarding the mistreatment, most cases involve those in families. There are already 36 cases under investigation for mistreatment, 11 for stalking and 13 for sexual violence.” These are the worrying numbers Michele Sagliomanager of the flying squad, leads to “Nel mirino”, the Telelibertà broadcast hosted by Nicoletta Bracchi with Thomas Trenchi.

“The cases are growing – adds the commander of the provincial investigative unit of the Carabinieri Michele Mezzetti guest at the Rotative Space – but over time we have seen a greater awareness taking root on the part of women who suffer violence. We therefore believe there is a new awareness of the possibility of emancipating ourselves from violence.”

Gender violence was at the center of the broadcast, where we also talked about taking responsibility for those who suffered it. 32 visits for domestic violence were recorded in the emergency room in the first 5 months of 2024, while in 2023 there were 50. It is there that Davide Bastoni, responsible for the anti-discrimination process of the ASL, works. “We welcome victims of violence at the most critical moment – he says – letting them know that they are not alone, we propose that they return to the emergency room within a month for a check-up and we put them in contact with the Piacenza Anti-Violence Centre”. 50 percent of the cases of women who access the emergency room because they are victims of violence, says Bastoni, have already arrived in that hospital department previously, with injuries declassified as trauma or anxiety-related disorders.

“The cultural context is often the justification for violence – continues Bastoni – when, for example, women are considered less important than men. Then there is the issue of the language barrier, which makes it difficult to communicate, which often forces the husband, perhaps the abuser, to translate. Furthermore, scientific literature highlights that in countries where sexual education is carried out in schools, gender violence and feminicides are significantly reduced”.

The president of the Piacenza Anti-Violence Center, Donatella Scardi, recalls that the reports received by the center have been since the beginning of the year 22. “Since 1994 – says Scardi – the year in which the center began its activity, the world has changed from the point of view of the perception of gender violence. At the time there was not even any talk of domestic violence.” Scardi also talks about the profile of the violent man which, he says, is transversal: “He is a man who provokes reactions in the victim, which he plans. The woman doesn’t understand what’s happening. Often, then, she takes courage when violence is committed against her children.” But Scardi also invites us to reflect on one aspect: “The complaint is not the point of arrival, but of departure. The woman must therefore be prepared for the subsequent process, because if she later withdraws the complaint she could face a much worse hell”.
