Catanzaro, the unsustainable degradation of Orso cinema

The October 29, 1979 a strong one tornado involved the Lido district Of Catanzaro. The effects of that atmospheric event were disastrous and among the various properties affected, also the “Bear Cinema”, very popular at the time, suffered extensive damage.

The glories of the ancient cinema are well known, as are the events that saw the building involved in long disputes between owners, private individuals and the public administration. However, we will not want to focus on this point but, vice versa, on what currently cannot go unnoticed, leaving an image of degradation and abandonment in the urban context.

Progress Course” is a street in the Lido district with high traffic flow, a place where pedestrians usually pass, as well as the “business card” of the same district. Well, the vision that presents itself, well known to residents, is certainly not sensational. The structure that has closed the entire facade of the old cinema since time immemorial, which is located in the neighborhood, is in disrepair, now missing some parts that compose it, you can see the inside where weeds have grown and even plants of a certain height. But that’s not all, the inside of the scaffolding has also become a receptacle for all kinds of waste resulting in poor hygiene.

There is no shortage of complaints from residents, having never gotten used to a disconcerting vision and the difficulties that arise from not being able to easily pass on that part of the sidewalk occupied by the structure. And therefore, after more than forty years the “goal” that one of the historic places of Catanzaro deserves has still not been reached. It is not the first time that the state of abandonment of the former cinema has been highlighted and the precariousness of the structure that “preserves” it becomes more evident every day. Who knows when we will be able to witness the “first take” of a scene that we would really like to see with the restoration of the places and the property.
