The abandonment of the walls of Bologna

Going around the walls of Bologna, one observes that in many places an invasive vegetation creeps between the bricks of the wall, chipping them. Furthermore, in several places weeds overhang the top and then develop downwards on both sides of the wall. It is a foreign body that damages the ancient protection of the city and does not allow you to admire the full beauty of the walls which are the pride of Bologna. Let’s get it removed.

Beppe Boni responds

The degradation and poor maintenance of the walls that surround Bologna on the avenues are an ancient problem. The Municipality periodically cleans it up, but a structural intervention would be needed. Italia Nostra has fought against abandonment on numerous occasions. The spontaneous vegetation that grows on the walls and creeps between the bricks offers a vast range of elements. Even capers have appeared some time ago. Our Italy has always had the health of its city walls at heart. Already in 2017 he promoted a meeting with the Municipality of Bologna to enhance and restore it in a broad and complete way. There are places where foliage and vegetation are now part of the furniture alongside poor cleanliness. A bit of history. The walls of Bologna embraced the urban area until the beginning of the 20th century, when they were almost completely demolished to build the current ring roads. They were built in three successive circles starting from the 3rd century. Today significant sections remain visible near the center next to the ancient doors. Of the third circle (that of 1300) over a total length of approximately 7,500 kilometers there still remain, quite clearly, approximately 2,700 in addition to the 10 gates that still indicate the entrances to the historic city.
