Asti, it is the day of President Mattarella visiting to remember Giovanni Goria

Today, Thursday 23 May, is Sergio Mattarella day.

The Head of State will be in Asti on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Giovanni Goria. The presidential helicopter will land at the «Censin Bosia» stadium around 10.40 am. Security measures have been put in place. «But the city will be usable in all its parts» underlines the police commissioner Marina Di Donato. The route will not be cordoned off and traffic will not be affected either.

The presidential motorcade will travel through the city like a “great wave”.

«We will move “like a fold” – explains Di Donato – we will accompany President Mattarella and we will close the roads only as strictly necessary to guarantee his passage».

In recent days, teams of public order enforcement officers, sharpshooters, bomb squads and anti-sabotage squads have arrived in the city. All the places visited by the Head of State were also cleared with the help of canine units and the manholes on the presidential route were sealed.

Mattarella is expected at the Alfieri Theater around 10.50 am.

Doing the honors will be the President of the Region Alberto Cirio and the Mayor, Maurizio Rasero with the Government represented by the Minister Paolo Zangrillo.

With the deputies from Asti Andrea Giaccone and Marcello Coppo, colleagues Chiara Gribaudo, Fabrizio Comba and Enrico Borghi, as well as the European parliamentarian Patrizia Toia.

Also in the audience were the members of the Council and the municipal council, the mayors of Asti and former collaborators of Giovanni Goria.

«Gianni was like a brother to me, our parents were friends and we grew up together – Aldo Pia, a historical figure in Asti politics, remembers him – it was he who pushed me to enter politics when he was municipal secretary of the DC in 1975».

The ceremony will be conducted by the journalist Carlo Cerrato, now secretary of the Goria Foundation. The event will open with a short video taken from «Teche Rai».

«Goria was the expression of a politics that no longer exists and which should be inspired – comments Bishop Marco Prastaro – I am happy that Mattarella, fortunately a guarantee of the institutions, is here to remember him».

The word will then pass to Marco Goria, president of the Foundation. Gianna Martinengo, Innocenzo Cipolletta, Franco Pizzetti and Bruno Tabacci will also speak.

According to the script, around midday, the President will leave the theater and walk to Piazza Alfieri.

Waiting for him, among others, are the Civil Protection volunteers to assist the police forces during the president’s predictable “crowd bath”: “We will be around 70, and some of us will also be in Piazza San Martino and Piazza Cairoli” he says Walter Marengo, president of the provincial detachment.

From there, the procession of “blue cars” will reach the headquarters of the event around 12.15 pm Giovanni Goria Foundation in Piazza San Martino, where a copy of the edition of the Italian Constitution that Goria had printed in one and a half million copies will be given to the president.

Around 12.45, still by car, Mattarella will reach the Alfieriani Study Center Foundation. The Head of State, led by the president of the Asti Musei Foundation Mario Sacco and the president of the study center Enrico Mattioda, will visit the museum and the birthplace of Vittorio Alfieri where you will be able to admire the latest addition to the preserved treasures: the manuscript that Vittorio Alfieri dictated to his secretary Gaetano Polidori, in Paris in 1789.
