Festival of Economy 2024 in Trento: programme, guests and conferences not to be missed

Scheduled from today, May 23, until May 26, the Trentino event will feature exceptional guests, such as Nobel Prize winners, ministers, speakers, economists, managers and entrepreneurs. Everything is ready in Trento for the most anticipated economic event of the year. Scheduled from today 23 May until 26 May, the Festival of Economics will feature some of the most influential figures on the national and international scene, including Nobel Prize winners, ministers, speakers, economists, managers and entrepreneurs from the major Italian and multinational companies, who For the occasion they will participate in a series of unmissable conferences and meetings. Now in its 19th edition, the Trentino event will host over 280 events spread throughout the city, divided into various schedules such as “Fuori Festival”, “Economies of Territories” and “Meetings with the Author”.

The theme of the 2024 edition

The common thread of the 2024 Economics Festival is “Quo Vadis? The dilemmas of our time”, which aims to shed light on everything that is happening globally, between the ongoing wars and elections in 76 countries. The 2024 edition will revolve around the theme of instability generated by conflicts in the world, also exploring their economic, geopolitical and social impact. An uncertainty also given by the great “dilemmas” of our time: from the demographic winter to the relationship between artificial intelligence and work, up to the climate crisis and the gap in gender equality.

The guests

The big names that we will see alternating on the stage in Trento are some of the most important personalities in the world of science, politics, economics and entrepreneurship. Among the exceptional guests the Nobel Prize winners James Heckman (Nobel for Economics 2000), Michael Spence (Nobel for Economics 2001), Edmund Phelps (Nobel for Economics 2006), Muhammad Yunus (Nobel for Economics Peace 2006) and Tawakkol Karman (Nobel Peace Prize 2011). There will also be 22 ministers, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, 80 speakers from the academic world, 40 international and national economists, 57 managers and entrepreneurs, from Luca Cordero di Montezemolo to Paolo Scaroni and Franco Bernabé. Among the protagonists of the event we also find 40 international universities and business schools: from the Bocconi University of Milan to Columbia University, up to the European University Institute.

Festival events not to be missed

Divided into different strands – ranging from current affairs to geopolitics, up to economic policies – the Festival will start today, 23 May, with a series of unmissable meetings. Among these, the intervention dedicated to the global balances that move from West to East stands out (with Sebastiano Maffettone of Luiss University, Giuliano Noci, vice-rector of the Polytechnic University of Milan, Andrea Zoppini of Roma Tre University and Sergio Fabbrini of Luiss University) . During the first day we will also talk about wars and the plight of civilians in the talk featuring the secretary general of Doctors Without Borders, Christopher Lockyear; of inflation and economic development with Giovanni Tria; of urban transformation together with the architect Carlo Ratti. Closing the first day of the event will be the dialogue between the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, and Ferruccio de Bortoli on the theme “My answers to the dilemmas of our time” at 5.15 pm at the Teatro Sociale of Trento.

Among the events not to be missed we also find the meeting (on Friday 24 May) dedicated to the topic of trade unions with Maurizio Landini, Luigi Sbarra and Pieropaolo Bombardieri; the one focused on the war (also on May 24) with David Petraeus, general of the United States army and former director of the CIA; the speech by Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi on the theme “A world in pieces, will the compass be found again?”; and the meeting on the link between climate change and monetary policy, together with Piero Cipollone, member of the executive committee of the ECB and Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs.

Outside the Festival

Among the schedules that make up the very dense calendar of the Trentino event we also find the Outside the Festival, a series of parallel events dedicated to young people and families. Talks, workshops and performances will revolve around the dilemmas of our time, offering a transversal vision of the most urgent issues of the present. The Fuori Festival events will feature creatives, entrepreneurs and various entertainment personalities. Among the meetings not to be missed stand out Rosa’s PillsRosa Miranda’s photographic exhibition dedicated to the theme of mental health set up throughout the event in the conference room of the Caritro Foundation, and Junior Lab, Il GiocaFestivalan opportunity for children to participate in workshops and play activities in Piazza della Mostra (open every day from 9am to 6pm).

Territorial economies

The series of events entitled is also added to the rich program of the festival Territorial economies, curated by the reference realities of the Trieste panorama. The focus of the program will be innovation, artificial intelligence, research, energy and industrial transition, business economics, education and models for the transformation of socio-economic relations. Organized by organizations such as Altroconsumo, Confcommercio Trentino and Associazione Artigiani Trentino, the events will explore the work of foundations, institutions, research bodies and local organisations.

Meetings with the Author

Finally, the jewel in the crown of the Festival of Economics is the cycle Meetings with the Author which, produced in collaboration with Gruppo 24 Ore, includes a series of appointments with some of the most influential contemporary writers: Cathy La Torre, author of the book It’s not normal to Ferruccio Pastore with his Metamorphosisup to Domenico Quirico, in the bookshop with Kalashnikov. From Vietnam to Ukraine, in one weapon the history of the cruel century. The schedule offers over 30 events to talk not only about the economy, but also about geopolitics, gender equality and the world of work.
