Overview

Selva Val Gardena is famous for its scenic beauty, outdoor activities and rich Ladin culture with numerous customs and traditions unique in their form. Its privileged position offers breathtaking views of some of the most iconic peaks of the Dolomites, including the Sella massif and the Sassolungo group.

Gastronomy

The gastronomic culture of the region is another highlight, and visitors can enjoy authentic typical South Tyrolean dishes in cozy mountain huts and local restaurants. The local cuisine offers a delicious combination of intense flavours, with authentic dishes based on cheeses, quality meats and typical products of the area. Among the most characteristic dishes we find barley soup “Panic”potato sheets with sauerkraut “Grosti da patac y kraut”the mosa “Jufa”spinach crescents “Crafuncins da ula vërda”fruit bread “Fuiacia” and many others.

During the winter, the flawless ski slopes attract winter sports enthusiasts, offering a wide range of opportunities for downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. In summer, Selva Val Gardena transforms into an authentic paradise for lovers of hiking and mountain biking, with a network of paths that cross spectacular landscapes. The route of the old train, which passes in front of Castel Gardena, offers a unique experience, with the diagram of the snow that has fallen since 1951 which tells the story of the snow-covered landscape in the Poza area and the Ski Champions route, where we find the history of skiing alpine in Val Gardena towards Plan.

Going up towards the Daunëi area, we encounter the suggestive Via Crucis, which guides us to Vallunga, located directly in the Puez Odle natural park and which passes under the fascinating ruins of Wolkenstein Castle. Also in the Daunëi area, on Alpe Juac, we find the sundial created by the artist Roland Moroder.

Brocon Pass

Overview

The Brocon Pass is a pass between the plateau of Tesino and the valley of Go ahead.

From a historical point of view the Pass held an important strategic point during the two world wars thanks to its position and even today there are signs of conflicts, including underground bunkers and trenches dug by Austrian militias.

Gastronomy

Typical and genuine products that can be tasted in the restaurants of Valsugana del Tesino, to discover the ancient flavors of Lagorai, starting a journey to discover the taste of products that have contributed to writing the history of these valleys.

Le Verde: as with all Trentino cuisine, local cuisine is also closely linked to the territory and characterized by simple foods that involve the use of land products. Among vegetables, an important food resource was once made up of potatoes, beans, turnips and cabbage; the latter, thanks to fermentation processes inside wooden tubs, were preserved both in the form of sauerkraut and “green”. But unlike the more well-known sauerkraut, present throughout the Alps and in a large part of the Germanic world, “le verde” represents a specific unicum from the Tesino basin which is still particularly appreciated on the table today, produced with a certain family regularity and offered according to ancient recipes, like the “Hunger-buster”, or paired with tasty meats.

The mountain cheese: the mountain farmers and shepherds who spend the summer months in the mountains to graze their cows and produce cheese, ricotta and butter are the most evident symbol of the ancient rhythms and deep-rooted traditions of Lagorai. It is precisely the mountain cheese that characterizes the mountain, which brings back to the palate all the aromas of the high altitude pastures. Malga cheese differs from cheese produced on a large scale because it cannot be separated from the territory: the milk from grazing cows has unique organoleptic characteristics that make it special and unmistakable.

The small fruits of Tesino: strawberries and wild strawberries. Blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. White or red currants. There are many fruits grown by young entrepreneurs from local farms, which offer the opportunity to savor the true taste of the mountains.

Points of Interest

Castello Tesino bio lake: inserted in the greenery of the sports area, multi-services and children’s playground, the Biolago represents a further opportunity aimed at relaxation and contact with nature. A project started in 2014, then resumed between 2017 and 2018 with the intervention of SOVA, of the Autonomous Province of Trento and has now reached completion with the changing rooms, bathrooms and the arrangement of the surrounding green area. The structure, a flagship and new added value to the valley, has a bathing area of ​​700 m2 and reaches a maximum height of mt. 1.40 and includes an internal children’s pool with a maximum height of 70 cm.

Celado Astronomical Observatory
– Tesino Castle: the Astronomical Observatory rises at an altitude of 1260 m on the south-west edge of the Celado, a plateau located north of that of Asiago. Inside the structure has a large classroom used for laboratories and for the introduction to guided tours to which is added a library well stocked with books on astronomy.

Tesino Griffon Tesino Castle
: the Grifone del Tesino is the new Land Art work created by the artist Marco Martalar, with roots and wood from the Vaia storm. After more than 2 months of work, 35 quintals and 2000 pieces, the Grifone, 6 meters high and 9 meters long, dominates like a guardian over the magnificent and panoramic Celado locality, from where you can admire the entire Tesino plateau and the peak of Auction top. Located on the border between the two regions of Trentino and Veneto, the mythological figure of the Griffin wants to symbolize the union between the two regions, which it represents in the Venetian lion and the Trentino eagle.

Museum on Via Pieve Tesino
: the Per Via Museum was born in 2014 in Pieve Tesino, on the eastern borders of the autonomous Province of Trento, to remember and tell the story of the itinerant print sellers who between the 18th and 19th centuries rewrote the history of the Tesino valley, making it famous in Europe and around the world. The Museum collects and preserves the stories of many men and women who were protagonists of this story, thanks to their courage, their resourcefulness and also their sacrifices.

Alcide De Gasperi House Museum Pieve Tesino
: opened to the public in 2006, the Museum is housed in De Gasperi’s birthplace, the symbolic place where his long and intense journey began.
