Elisabetta Canalis and Lida Olbia still together to help dogs

New edition of the project against leishmaniasis with Lida Olbia and Canalis

Elisabetta Canalis she is the godmother of the project implemented by Lida Olbia to save the dogs from leishmaniasis and abandonment. The initiative has reached its fourth edition and after two editions in Pantelleria it will be held for the second time in Olbia, where 300 dogs will be visited. From May 24th to 26th tests, vaccinations, anti-parasitic treatments against Leishmaniasis and sterilization interventions. The project starts from the non-profit organization I love animals with the contribution of Msd Animal Health

“To eradicate Leishmaniasis from Olbia, one of the most serious and widespread infectious diseases that affects dogs and humans through an insect that acts as a vector (sandfly or sandfly), from 24 to 26 May around 300 dogs from the Sanctuary”The Minor Brothers” Lida section of Olbia, managed by the manager Cosetta Ready, they will be subjected to free tests, vaccinations and anti-parasitic treatments – we read in a note -. The dogs that will be vaccinated against leishmaniasis are only those that tested negative in screening tests. However, to reduce the risk of spreading the disease to all resident dogs, both those negative and positive for Leishmania will be protected with devices with repellent activity against the vectors”.

Furthermore, to contribute to the fight against stray dogs, sterilization interventions will also be carried out. The project was born in 2021 under the patronage of the Ministry of Health and was awarded by President Sergio Mattarella with the Medal of the President of the Republic.

The organizers

“Leishmaniasis is an incurable disease” – he explains Mauro Cervia, president of Amoglianimali Onlus and veterinary doctor – “present in Italy and in numerous areas of the world. Lately, due to seasonal alterations and the general increase in temperatures, it is also expanding into previously non-endemic areas. Over the last year the phenomenon has certainly worsened, however I find that there is greater awareness on the subject among public opinion and institutions. Let’s not forget that the transmission and spread of Leishmaniasis can be controlled and fought with some weapons, the most important of all widespread vaccination and prevention campaigns like this one which was possible thanks to the unconditional contribution of MSD Animal Health”.

The godmother Canalis

“For the second consecutive year I decided to be part of this project – he comments Elisabetta Canalis -. Which materializes the possibility of sterilizing many dogs and vaccinating them against leishmaniasis. A gesture of great humanity since safeguarding the health of animals means safeguarding ourselves. I would like to thank you for this involvement Mauro Cerviaveterinary doctor, president of Amoglianimali Onlus but above all a big-hearted person who I have known since I was twenty and who has never stopped taking care of my animals. Leishmaniasis is a huge plague in Sardinia. As well as the continuous litters that are abandoned and then rescued by people who entrust them to kennels where, as is known, it is not possible to manage the maintenance of a large number of animals. The involvement of the “I Fratelli Minori” shelter kennel in Olbia is an important gesture for the whole of Sardinia”.
