“And now a new winery to start wine tourism”

Two estates, one in Sambuca di Sicilia, another on Etna. Two extremely different territories, where the vision ofGiovinco company is reflected in the wines produced. A family history that began in 1920 and which will inaugurate a winery in the province of Agrigento in the next few weeks.

Today, 40 hectares of vineyards are part of the estate and around 50 in total with 30 thousand bottles produced: “We are certain – Antonino Oddo, marketing and sales manager tells us – that the production will increase. Because we want to do, not to stop and to carry on a project started many years ago by my great-grandfather.”

Since 2006 the company has converted to organic and is managed by the oenologist Vito Giovinco together with her nephew Antonino and the future of the company, the young Anna, who has recently become a woman of wine and is about to graduate in oenology.

Today they are in production seven wines in total and one oil Nocellara del Belice 100%. Two classic method sparkling wines are produced in Sambuca from Nerello Mascalese, an organic Grillo Sicilia Doc and a Nero d’Avola. “This last wine is a Sambuca di Sicilia DOC, the smallest Sicilian DOC, little known, but in which we believe and want to invest. The aim is to create an even deeper connection with our territory and offer authenticity in every glass.”

On Etnainstead, Etna Bianco Doc, Etna Rosato Doc and Etna Rosso Doc are produced. The vineyards are located in the volcanic territories of Randazzo, between 750 and 800 meters above sea level, in the district of San Lorenzo. “It is – continues Oddo – a particularly popular and sought-after product. There is a lot of talk about it, but it must be said that on the foreign market we sell much more Grillo and Nero d’Avola”.

2023 was also for the Giovinco company a complicated year, especially because we must adhere to strict protocols due to the organic regime: “We have irrigation systems in all the vineyards and we try to anticipate treatments so as not to take action when it is too late. We also focus on varieties that seem to resist such as the native ones or the international ones such as Syrah which seems to resist particularly well in our territories”. However, we are gearing up to purchase vineyards at a higher altitude, at least up to 400 metres.

Now, however, there is a predominant project: the opening of a new winery in Sambuca di Sicilia to begin a wine tourism. Furthermore, the objective of expanding abroad continues: “By the end of the year we hope to expand the contacts made at Vinitaly. We are still young but we have a great desire to grow and make the fruit of our work known.”
