It was supposed to leave at half past eleven from Livigno for 206 kilometers including a passage from Valtellina to Switzerland, it left three hours later from Lasa for 118 kilometers all in South Tyrol. THE NEWS
Under a rain of water and inevitable controversies, the race starts very fast in search of escape: the route descends slightly towards Bolzano and the shortening entices those seeking glory. Another ten kilometers pass and four of them leave: Davide Ballerini (Astana), Mirco Maestri (Polti Kometa), Andrea Piccolo (EF) and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal QuickStep). Maestri and Alaphilippe are still together, who for his part further “ratifies” the friendship with the ProTeam of Basso and Contador by availing himself of the help of the flagship driven by Jesus Hernandez in the undressing. The climb immediately claimed victims, with Maestri, Piccolo and Ballerini losing contact and being overtaken by Filippo Fiorelli (VF Bardiani Csf Faizanè) who consolidated his lead in the Intergiro classification in Fiè, and by Andrea Pietrobon (Polti Kometa) who in Siusi confirms itself as leader of breakaways and flying finishes. In view of the Pinei pass, the brawl breaks out between the men in the rankings and those interested in the GPM: Pelayo Sanchez, who had remained hidden until then in the Movistar forcing, flames and creams the main platoon, where Romain Bardet, captain of the DSM Firmenich, is in difficulty. Other riders try, including Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) and Jan Tratnik (Visma Lease a Bike) but the good counterattack is, 13 km from the finish, that of Ewen Costiou (Arkea B&B), Giulio Pellizzari (VF Bardiani Csf Faizanè) and Christian Scaroni (Astana) with the latter going to take off the blue jersey on the GPM (worn by right instead of Pogacar, remember) to Simon Geschke of Cofidis who remains at the back.
Short descent to Ortisei and then the final slopes of Monte Pana: the chasing trio catches and overtakes Alaphilippe, but on the vertical ramps of the last two kilometers yet another Slovenian masterpiece takes place. Tadej almost didn’t want to start, but the action of Movistar (Rubio will finish 11th) brought him so close to the fugitives that by taking not even a very fast pace he went up the inexorable slope: at -700 meters he took away Pellizzari’s dream of success but, after taking the triumph by counting to five with the fingers of his right hand, he gives glasses and a shirt to the talent from the Marche. A Pellizzari who in turn precedes the returning Martinez, the authentic “first of the Others” among the big names.
