BARI – The Bari Metropolitan Council unanimously definitively approved the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PUMS)the strategic document which aims to guide metropolitan mobility policies for the next 10 years and access national and European funding.

The PUMS was born from a path shared with the 41 Municipalities, which lasted about a year, which allowed us to arrive at a strategic and polycentric planning of the interventions, enhancing the territorial, demographic and socio-economic specificities of each Municipality. The Metropolitan Sustainable Mobility Plan is based on five main assets: universal accessibility, sustainability, liveability, safety and technology.

The approval of the PUMS integrates with the numerous strategic planning documents already being implemented in the metropolitan area.

The objective of the PUMS is to encourage local public transport and more sustainable mobility through, just to name a few, the following project actions: 330 km of new metropolitan-scale cycle paths and a network of velostations, 2 super cycle paths, the Bari-Modugno and Bari–Mola, the electric BRT network (Bus Rapid Transport) of the city of Bari and the hydrogen BRT line that will connect Bari and Santeramo, 4 new road connections, the new Camionale, the completion of the Poligonale and the external ring road and 20 new car parks of exchange.

The metropolitan PUMS remains a dynamic planning tool and, therefore, following the first implementation interventions, it can be modified by incorporating new observations and additions.

The creation of the PUMS, according to the cognitive framework developed by the multidisciplinary working group of the Metropolitan City of Bari which oversaw the development of the cognitive framework, the definition of the general and specific objectives and the start of the participatory phase, will allow the following to be achieved results:

· 52% increase in passenger traffic on the railway network in the metropolitan area;

· 34% increase in passengers transported by the Bari urban transport network

· Overall increase of 19% in passengers on the metropolitan city’s urban and extra-urban public transport network;

· 16% reduction in travel and 9.8% reduction in car travel for the entire metropolitan city of Bari;

· 33% reduction in travel and 23% reduction in car travel in the Municipality of Bari.
