A maxi-European project is underway to map all the genetic, environmental and behavioral risk factors of dementia, with the aim of developing early interventions. This is “COMFORTage”, a project with a total duration of 4 years which will see two Italian entities as leaders: the Catholic University of Rome and the Gemelli Irccs Polyclinic. The key objective of the project, which will involve 13 European countries, is to be able to identify the patients who are most at risk, and then calibrate personalized preventive actions.

The maxi-project in detail

The project will make extensive use of artificial intelligence and hi-tech aids and will be coordinated by Camillo Marra, professor of Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neurosciences and director of the Gemelli Memory Clinical Operational Unit, who will direct the 13 different intervention programs planned across Europe . Gemelli Generator and Gemelli Digital Medicine & Health will also make their contribution, contributing to the development of artificial intelligence systems for data management. The objective is to collect a vast dataset that will be able to offer new perspectives in the prevention and treatment of dementia.

How the project will be structured

“COMFORTage sees the participation of 29 centers in Europe with the aim of enrolling over 4000 patients (of which 300 Italians), identifying the main risk factors of Alzheimer’s and promoting the intervention of innovative rehabilitation and prevention systems based on new technologies, artificial intelligence, virtual augmented reality”, reported Marra, presenting the maxi-project in a dedicated Clinical Meeting. But how will the project be structured? The COMFORTage consortium will carry out screening on healthy people but with initial cognitive deficits, even if not clinically manifest, or individuals in a very early stage of the disease. Risk maps will then be created and interventions implemented using the most recent technological acquisitions, including immersive reality and artificial intelligence techniques.
