Ravenna Festival. The performances of the nanou group continue with the “redrum” choreographic installation

On the occasion of the celebrations of its 20 years, the nanou group debuts at the Ravenna Festival with redrum, a new choreographic installation that brings the company back to working on its cinematic imagery. It will be possible to see it for the first time until May 26th and, only on Wednesday May 22nd, the music of the installation, by Bruno Dorella, will be performed live.

Until Sunday 26 May redrum will be accessible from 5pm to 8pm in the Sala Corelli of the Alighieri Theater in Ravenna: the public will be able to watch the performance for as long as they wish, with the last admission recommended at 7.30pm.

“The title of the work pays homage to The Shining, both the novel by Stephen King and the film interpretation given by Stanley Kubrick, evoking the idea of a non-existent but familiar place, capable of unleashing a disturbing imagination populated by ghosts and memories in which the boundary between reality, dream and desire is lost. Amplifying these scenarios is the sound system of the work which, as in other productions, has been entrusted to Bruno Dorella, an artist who with his compositions follows and raises the scope of the company’s imagery” the company explains.

redrum is a choreographic installation for five dancers and a performer in which the rules of the theatrical ritual are rewritten to transform the show into a place to live in. redrum was born from the desire to immerse the spectator within a universe made of emotional affections and cultural references, to push him into the imaginary world that the company has always traversed, made up of choreographic compositions, cinematographic references and visual art spaces. The format becomes that of the installation: the live experience does not have a beginning and an end, but an opening and closing that happens in a specific space and develops differently each time. The dance action has no spatial boundaries, mixes the real with the improbable, transforms common perception and invites the spectator to explore a world in which the boundaries between true and false dissolve, allowing a performative object to be composed before the eyes in a unique and perhaps unrepeatable way.

As in many nanou works, also in this case various elements contribute to the construction of an environmental and immersive work of art: the choreographic composition by Marco Valerio Amico and Rhuena Bracci, the stage costumes, a series of actions that enhance the distinctive traits of each performer, the light, which here is controlled by hand by the dancers themselves, the space, the sound, the case and the audience are all agents that merge and give back a live experience designed to never be the same as herself.

“Precisely due to the temporal and spatial nature of redrum, the key element that amplifies the randomness of the performance is in fact the audience, which can remain inside the installation for the entire time it is opened, can enter, exit, move within the space or remain still. Can stand or sit on the floor. He can walk freely in the environment, moving carefully and approaching the artists with caution, taking care to preserve their space. In redrum everything happens, has always happened and will happen again” they conclude.

redrum is the first chapter of the new multi-year Overlook Hotel project by the nanou group.
