Spectators at the Grande Torino: this year the highest average in the Cairo era

Turin, the public believed it this year: record attendance at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino in the era of the Cairo presidency. Here is the comparison with previous seasons

The season hasn’t ended yet, there is still one match that could count for Europe, next Sunday’s match against Atalanta, but for this season the shutters of the Olimpico Grande Torino stadium are being lowered: the match against Milan was in fact the last home match of the Granata team which this season, despite the frequent protests and continuous strikes by the fans, has always been able to rely on an almost always full stadium. Let’s compare the average number of spectators at the stadium compared to previous years.

This year record turnout in Serie A in the new millennium

The fans returned to pack the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino and especially in the middle of the championship they played a fundamental role in supporting the team: after the 19 championship matches played at home, a total of 407,358 spectators were registered at the Olimpico for an average of 22,631 fans present at each match. This is a record that hasn’t been seen in Serie A since the 1993-94 season when the average reached peaks of 25,000 spectators at each home match. Consequently this also becomes the record for average attendance of spectators in the era of President Cairo, who only in his first year of presidency with Toro in Serie B recorded a higher figure (more than 24 thousand, in a much more capacious). Numbers that seem utopian for today but which in the event of a historic result could be seen again. In fact, the affection and closeness of the Granata public has never been lacking, one sign is the record attendance in a single match: 27,788 spectators in the home derby against Juventus, while the lowest turnout was recorded against Sassuolo in the Marathon contest match with 17,698 spectators present.

Comparison with past seasons

This year Torino once again exceeded the ceiling of 20,000 fans per match after 19,508 last year. In the previous season, the one after the Covid years with the restrictions on the public, 21,381 spectators had been seen at the Grande Torino and to be able to see a similar considerable figure we have to go back to the 2018-19 season when there were on average 21,385 people. This was the first year after the years of the crisis and the roller coaster between Serie A and Serie B in which at least more than 20 thousand spectators showed up at the Grande Torino Stadium. In the year of the return to Serie A, the fans at the stadium were 15,615 per match, starting a growing trend which in 2015-16 reached the peak of 19,392 spectators, an average attendance figure which remained at these levels also in 2016-17 and in 2017-18.
