Rome – The celebrations of the 78th anniversary of the birth of the Italian Republic opened today in Rome with the solemn flag-raising at the Altare della Patria and the homage to the Unknown Soldier, where a laurel wreath was laid by the president of Republic Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by the highest officials of the State. As for Calabria, ceremonies are scheduled in the Calabrian municipalities with floral tributes. In Catanzaro, in Piazza Matteotti, the celebrations opened with the celebratory ceremony and, subsequently, in the Politeama theater, the presentation of the honors of merit of the Republic. Similar initiatives are planned in the other provincial capitals of Calabria. In Lamezia Terme the day is characterized by the laying of laurel wreaths and reflections at the monuments of the fallen in the three former municipalities.
Mattarella: ‘Our Constitution is wise and far-sighted’. The message to the Chief of Defense Staff
“Celebrating the seventy-eight years of the birth of the Italian Republic recalls the values of our identity and of a far-sighted and wise Constitution – writes the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message to the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone on the occasion of 2 June -, the fruit of the extraordinary rebirth that began with the Liberation struggle. Independence and freedom are achievements that must be defended every day, in communion of intent and with the ability to cooperate for the common good”. “The Fathers of the Homeland were aware of the risks and limits of closure in national contexts and dreamed of an Italy open to Europe, close to the peoples who were fighting for their freedoms everywhere in the world”, Mattarella’s message. “Our contribution – and in it the Armed Forces – to the cause of international peace and stability is more precious than ever in today’s situation characterized by devastation and aggression against civilian populations in Europe and the Middle East”, added President Mattarella in the message.

“Happy Birthday to our Republic. On 2 June 1946, with a referendum in which 89% of eligible Italians participated, citizens chose the country’s form of government.
