“Eighty years ago, the Battle of Monte Cassino ended with a victory for the Allied forces that opened the road to Rome and marked the beginning of the end of the occupation of Italy. The actions and courage of the men and women who achieved The successes here were instrumental in enabling the Normandy landings a few weeks later”. King Charles underlines this in his message on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. “On this eightieth anniversary, let us stop to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by so many for the cause of freedom in Europe – perhaps even more touching today. – continues the British sovereign – We remember all those who fought in Italy’s liberation campaign, including the lives of Commonwealth personnel who never returned home and who lie, or are remembered, in the Cassino War Cemetery. And we also remember the deprivation, support and suffering of the Italian civilian population during this period.” “Gathering to honor the fallen in this sacred place reminds us that the rights and freedoms we enjoy today were hard won and carry great responsibilities for our generations and those to come.
Such a sacrifice can never be forgotten”, remarks Charles III again.
