Illicit waste disposal, maxi police operation throughout Italy: checks also in Molise

ISERNIA – Vast operation by the State Police on the national territory to combat the illicit disposal of waste, to ascertain and sanction the multiple forms of illegality in the delicate sector of environmental protection. Checks also in Molise.

“The complex activities, coordinated at a central level by the SCO, were conducted – we read in a note released by the Police Headquarters – by agents of the Flying Squads and SISCOs in 33 Italian provinces with the specialist support of the regional agencies for environmental protection and the Police. In some provinces, given the operational specificity in which it operated, the peripheral structures of the National Port Authority Corps were also involved.

At the end of 3 days of intense operational activities, over 168 areas suspected of being used for the illicit storage and conservation of waste were subjected to control, 40 of which were subjected to seizure. More than 1763 subjects were identified, 103 people were reported in a state of freedom for crimes related to illicit waste management, 2 people arrested in flagrante delicto and over 85 administrative violations detected for an amount exceeding 200 thousand euros.

The investigation and verification activities resulting from access to the controlled sites will continue in the next few days by the individual regional environmental protection agencies, in order to assess the existence of further administrative and criminal offences.

In the Province of Isernia, the activities were carried out jointly with SISCO of Campobasso and ARPA Molise. Specifically, on Monday 13 May the following inspections were carried out in Isernia at the municipal waste water purifier with sampling by ARPA and sampling of the waters of the Carpino river upstream and downstream of the drainage of the purification plant for subsequent laboratory tests.

On the same day, a check was carried out at an abandoned area – a former poultry farm located in Isernia – with the presence of sheds and asbestos roofing, also in this case with collection by ARPA – with the help of the Fire Brigade – of samples for subsequent tests.

On Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th, some quarries for the extraction of limestone material were checked; checks were carried out with a Geiger counter and electromagnetometer to measure harmful radiation and to verify the stratification of the soil to detect fluid or muddy agglomerates buried deep down. As a result of the check, no anomalies were detected”.

The activity is part of the constant prevention and monitoring action conducted by the State Police, in a sector that for decades has represented a source of huge, illicit profit also for criminal organizations, in order to put a stop to the expansion of so-called environmental crimes which damage the territory and constantly put the health of citizens at risk.
