BETWEEN LANDSCAPES AND SAILS: THE MIRAGES OF CELONA ON DISPLAY IN PISTOIA

The art exhibition Miraggi by Pasquale Celona opens on Saturday 25 May, at 5.30 pm in the Frescoed Rooms of the Palazzo Comunale of Pistoia (piazza del Duomo, 1).

Conceived and curated by Jacopo Celona and Melanie Zefferino – the latter is also responsible for the catalog -, with the participation of the Municipality of Pistoia, in the four frescoed rooms of the Town Hall the temporary anthological exhibition offers over thirty paintings created in more than 40 years of artistic career and ranging between still lifes, figures, landscapes and seascapes, the beloved sails. These subjects are accompanied by two well-known works, Primavera (1985) and the Annunciation (1992).

Born in 1943, Calabrian by birth, but Tuscan by adoption, in 1995 Pasquale Celona together with his brother Piero conceived and inaugurated the “Florence Biennale”, an international exhibition of contemporary art and design (of which he is now President) which in 14 editions has achieved exciting results and is preparing to experience another extraordinary moment next year with the fifteenth edition and over thirty years of activity.

However, in all this time, Celona has never forgotten that he is first and foremost an artist, extremely attentive to everything that surrounds him: as Melanie Zefferino noted, onto the canvases Celona transposed «his visions of landscapes, but also of figures and things suspended in an atmosphere between the real and the imaginary. Wandering among pastel-toned clouds, fairy trees and iridescent sails, through his dreamlike visual narration, Celona also tells us that, on the banks of the Ionian Sea, the ‘descendants of Magna Graecia’ still today erect huts – as ephemeral as they are suggestive in the paintings of the artist, since they bring us back to summer evenings spent in youth and imprinted in the memory, where however the memory has taken on the blurred contours of myth. The artist collects and reinterprets the cultural heritage of the West – continues the co-curator of the exhibition -, but also the ideas of the twentieth century and the contemporary world, infusing his paintings, through the particular use of light which is peculiar to him, with the colors and the suggestions of Calabria which gave him birth, but also of Tuscany, his adopted land. And he does it by observing, and at the same time reinventing through images, the world around him. The representations that derive from his artistic work are as imaginative as they are elusive in their aesthetic value, based on a continuous search for harmony and beauty. These paintings are therefore admirable “mirages”, oils on canvas in which light becomes the corporeality of a fantastic universe of a thousand colours”.

Until June 16th the exhibition can be visited every day (except Monday and June 2nd) from 11am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm, always with free admission.
