At 1.16pm, after the departure from Piazzale Roma and the walkway through the streets of Riccione, the 13th stage of the Giro d’Italia officially began: the 179 kilometer Riccione-Cento. Immediately with an escape, that of Tarozzi, Tonelli and Pietrobon who, with the large group not breaking up, gained 3’20” after 11 km. At approximately 1.30 pm the caravan, after having crossed Riccione, Rimini and Santarcangelo, entered the province of Forlì-Cesena.
Once the fugitives, large group and cars and motorbikes in tow had passed, all the roads were able to reopen and the flow of traffic began, which had created slowdowns and queues on the alternative roads, especially at the main city junctions, particularly around 11.45 am and at 1pm coinciding with the passage of the pink advertising caravan and the athletes. In general, underlines the Municipal Administration, traffic was regular without any particular problems.
Between uniforms and volunteers, almost 190 men were involved in controlling road intersections. Specifically, there were 106 municipal uniforms involved in total, including some officers from the Bellaria Igea Marina Local Police, who joined their colleagues from Rimini. In addition to 12 officers from the Local Police of Rimini, responsible for coordination and 30 volunteers, coming from three different associations: “Pedale Riminese”, “Ass. Nazionale Carabinieri” and “Frecce Rosse”.
Agents of the State Police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza were also added to this deployment of forces, engaged with presence and patrols deployed in the area and operating alongside the Local Police.
In particular, the entire state road 16 and Via Emilia were monitored until the end of the race, concentrating attention on the 6 passages (sea-mountain) represented by the 4 roundabouts – Varisco/Rosmini (Fire Brigade roundabout), Covignano, ‘Valentini’ roundabout (access to the Padulli district from via Tosca), via della Fiera/Grotta Rossa – and 2 underpasses – via Rodriguez and Marecchiese. The two Befane and Via Coriano roundabouts were completely closed as planned.
