The first stage of the “Interprovincial Games Without Borders” took place in Imperia on 15 and 16 May, organized as part of the national program GAME UPI (Young Self-Determination Movement Empowerment) promoted by the Union of Italian Provinces and which will involve the Provinces of the area North, including the Province of Forlì-Cesena, within the ALL4GAMES project.

The team is made up of eight young people identified through the project partners. Six boys were identified among the fourth grade students of the Fulcieri sports scientific high school in Forlì: Matteo Bartolini, Alessandro Giosa, Matilde Zoli, Linda Bertaccini, Elia Fabbri, Lorenzo Santucci. Two other boys, Manuel Soldati and Jeremi Reciputi, were instead identified by UISP Forlì-Cesena.

On the two days of 15 and 16 May, the eight young people went to Imperia to take part in competitive and non-competitive activities, challenging the young people from the Provinces of Imperia, Savona, La Spezia, Alessandria and Treviso.

The young people were able to try their hand at various sports, divided between traditional sports and popular sports.

On Wednesday 15 May, the children participated in the theoretical-demonstrative explanation of the most traditional games and during the evening visited the maritime museum and the planetarium. The actual challenges took place the following day, where the swimming relay opened the day’s competitions: for each athlete a 50 meter freestyle competition, the best known and most practiced swimming technique.

Followed by two mini Pallapugno and Petanque tournaments. Pallapugno Leggera is a traditional Italian sport currently practiced in some Piedmont and Ligurian provinces. The aim of the game is to get the ball, to be hit on the fly or on the first bounce with the fist protected by a bandage, beyond the back line of the opponent’s court.

Petanque, born in 1907, is also a traditional sport, which is played with metal bowls, generally smaller than those used in the traditional game of bowls, and a wooden or metal ball called “boccino”. The objective of the game is to score points by throwing your balls as close as possible to the jack and at the same time prevent your opponent from doing so. Each team has a number of balls, which each player must throw while standing still “with their feet anchored to the ground”. In addition to requiring skill in precise bowling, petanque requires a certain skill in calculating distances and defining a strategy for positioning them to obtain maximum scores.

Finally, the teams from each Province took part in athletics challenges: firstly a speed race then the Vortex launch. Lastly, the long jump, where, using the official rules of the discipline, the boys will have two jump attempts.

The Interprovincial Games do not only represent a competitive challenge between teams of children, but above all they aim to be an opportunity to promote community sport, encourage the spread of participation in sports among young people to build a more inclusive society, also thanks to comparison between kids from different backgrounds.
