Respiratory pathologies and rehabilitation, a four-day course at San Donato in Arezzo

Four days dedicated to respiratory diseases. From 15 to 18 May the Auditorium of the San Donato hospital in Arezzo hosted the course on “Multi-professional care with rehabilitation value in UTIP” organized by the Department of Technical Health Professions, Rehabilitation and Prevention in collaboration with the Department of Nursing Professions and midwives and the Pneumology and UTIP UOC of the San Donato PO. The theoretical lessons, held in the auditorium, alternated with practical exercises within the pulmonary intensive care unit.

«The objectives of the course – explains the Daniela Cardellidirector of the Department of Technical Health Professions, Rehabilitation and Prevention – are to train and perfect the professional training and care path of the various figures who work on patients hospitalized in Utip: primarily physiotherapists, together with nurses, speech therapists, OSS and doctors” .

«The topics covered in the course – explains the Raffaele ScalaDirector of the UOC Pneumology San Donato – concern the causes, physiology and therapy of respiratory failure, the application of oxygen therapy and non-invasive respiratory support techniques, cough assistance, weaning from mechanical ventilation, management of tracheotomy in critical respiratory patients admitted to the ICU”.

«The course, thanks to the theoretical and practical contents, allows participants to try their hand at different physiotherapy and patient care techniques in mechanical ventilation – explains the Emiliano Ceccherinidirector of UOP Functional Rehabilitation Arezzo – It is known that only the application of shared protocols by a multi-professional team from the UTIP and pneumology and based on competence and experience can allow the best results to be achieved in terms of survival and recovery of capacity respiratory and motor”.

In the faculty, speaker of excellence at national level, Dr. Marta Lazzeri Physiotherapist from Niguarda in Milan with her team.

«This course – he adds Raffaele Scala Director of UOC Pneumology and UTIP San Donato Hospital – represents an important educational moment, awaiting the opening of the new Intensive Pneumology facility with a rehabilitation orientation with a weaning center from mechanical ventilation which has already been approved by the Tuscany South East Local Health Authority. Intensive Pneumological Rehabilitation is aimed at patients who have overcome the acute respiratory attack in the ICU, but who remain partially or totally dependent on mechanical ventilation, with or without tracheostomy tube, or who must be discharged home with a mechanical ventilator” .

«With this path, ASL Tse places itself at the forefront – he underlines Antonella Lorenzoni, Director of the UOC for Rehabilitation Health Professions Setting Rehabilitation Care Paths -. An innovative path which, thanks to the multidisciplinary and multi-professional approach with physiotherapists, speech therapists, physiatrists, nurses and OSS, allows the recovery of both respiratory and motor function of critical patients who, otherwise, would prolong their stay in intensive care or in the UTIP. In this way the user with severe respiratory failure is at the center of a complete path of pneumological care which passes from the acute phase to rehabilitation and ends with discharge”.

To understand the dimensions and impact of this path, it is sufficient to remember that every year the Pulmonary Intensive Care Unit (UTIP) of Arezzo successfully treats around 300 patients: of these, 15% require rehabilitation treatment intensive pneumology.
