The Lucanian regional council adopts new measures to prevent and fight fires
The regional council approved, with resolution no. 369 of 15 May, the Regional Fire Prevention Plan (PAR) 2024-2026 and the framework agreement with the National Fire Brigade. Both documents were sent to the Council for final approval.
The Plan, drawn up by the Regional Office for Civil Protection and the Forestry and Land Protection Office, introduces important innovations for the three-year period of validity. These include improving the prediction, prevention and active fight against forest fires. The PAR involves forestry carabinieri, firefighters, reclamation consortium, park authorities, research institutes such as Tito’s Cnr-Imaa, and civil protection volunteer organizations in Basilicata.
“With the new three-year plan we will implement targeted interventions in wooded areas or close to residential areas,” explained Giovanni Di Bello, regional director of Civil Protection. “Sighting actions will be launched by integrating ultralight aerial vehicles, drones and data from the regional instrumental network. This will also be possible thanks to the strengthening of the digital radio network of the Basilicata Region and the hardware and software equipment of the regional permanent unified operations room”.
For the active fight against fires, the ground teams will be deployed based on the indications of the forest fire risk bulletin, developed with the Fire-Sat-Basilicata forecasting model in collaboration with the Argon group of the Cnr-Imaa.
Di Bello added that “there will be moments of training and exercises for the staff involved at all levels in fighting fires and awareness-raising actions aimed at citizens and local authorities”.
The PAR will be implemented through annual programs, and in the next few days the competent offices will approve the document with the operational indications for the management of the current year’s forest fire campaign.
