The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has authorized Elmed, the first electricity interconnection project between Italy and Tunisia which will be built by Terna and Steg, the operator of the Tunisian grid. This was announced in a joint press release explaining that a total investment of around 850 million euros is expected, of which 307 are European funds.

The power line

The power line will have a total length of approximately 220 kilometres, of which the majority will be a submarine cable, up to a maximum depth of approximately 800 meters along the Sicilian Channel. As regards the terrestrial cable, on the Italian side it will extend for 18 kilometers from the Castelvetrano landing place (Trapani), up to the conversion station which will be built in Partanna (Trapani), near the existing electrical station. In Tunisia, the electricity station will be built in Mlaabi, on the Cape Bon peninsula.

The work will also be carried out with EU funds

The authorized interconnection is part of the Mattei Plan projects.

The Italy-Tunisia electricity bridge is described as a strategic work for the Italian electricity system within the energy transition objectives set by the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan. Of the total investment to carry out the work, 307 million were allocated by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility financing programme. This is the first case in which the European Union finances a project in which one of the countries involved – in this case Tunisia – is not part of the Union.
