One hundred young students in a lesson on peace, memory, human rights and solidarity. The Anvcg – National Association of Civilian Victims of War has completed the meetings in schools of the “Witnesses of Peace” project which, in recent weeks, has visited various institutions in the city of Arezzo to offer opportunities for reflection and in-depth analysis on the consequences of war and the need to affirm a culture inspired by the principles of respect, hospitality and non-violence.

The course, which concluded with the sixth grade of the Aliotti Institute, was archived with a particularly positive outcome due to the attention paid by students of different ages to the testimonies of speakers who recounted the suffering suffered during the Second World War or, subsequently, for the explosion of unexploded ordnance.

This last topic was treated with the support of the remains of bombs, grenades or ammunition found in the Arezzo area to teach how to recognize war remnants and provide advice on how to behave in case of discovery: the sudden explosions, in fact, resulted in hundreds of accidents and mutilations among the same civilians even decades later.

The aim was to promote an intellectual and emotional knowledge of the war, with meetings aimed at creating awareness in the young generations on the importance of becoming active protagonists of the processes of change and builders of a culture of peace and solidarity.

With this in mind, the Anvcg concluded the events with the symbolic gesture of handing over a flag of peace on which the students placed their signature to make a direct commitment as “promoters of peace”.

«Peace is a daily achievement – explained Ulisse Domini, provincial president of the Anvcg, – and it is an asset that everyone must take care of. The invitation addressed to the children is to seek dialogue, solidarity and attention to others already in small daily gestures to be custodians of memory and to become true witnesses of peace».
