Wild boars in Molise

The history of man and his coexistence with wildlife is very interesting. In some cases, however, the latter can really worry. As you have surely already understood, wild boars in Molise are on the rise. These animals are capable of adapting very easily to habitats and changes in climate and territory. The increase in the presence of these animals in the Italian region of Molise is worrying.

Young specimens of fertile age are increasing at the expense of other more adult specimens. The phenomenon is affecting this region and has attracted great curiosity from people, especially experts who want to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. Among other things, cases of incursions of these animals into cultivated areas as well as into streets are not at all rare. Scholars from the regional wildlife observatory found that these animals increased by as much as 80%.140 percent per year for the last 10 years. These are not low percentages at all, on the contrary.

The causes of the increase in wild boars

But why would there be an increase in wild boars in Molise? Scholars have tried to answer this question. First of all, one of the main causes of this exponential increase of these animals in the region would be the expansion of areas agricultural plants without adequate protection. And then again, among other reasons, there would also be the increase in food made up of waste and feed that is left in areas close to urban centers. Also not to be overlooked is the hunting activity practiced and used to stabilize the ecosystem, which naturally does not take young specimens into consideration. And not only does it not take them into consideration, but it favors their reproduction. Most of the wild boars would concentrate in the Lower Molise with a density of over 10 wild boars per square km.

The city most affected would be Campobasso with its province. Based on what is reported by sources on the web, the areas most affected by this phenomenon would be the territories of Monte Vairano and Petrella Tifernina. In Alto Molise, however, the concentration would be lower: we are talking about 6/8 specimens per square km. The main reason for this lower density would be the presence of the wolf, a threatening predator. The high presence of wild boars is worrying because it threatens agricultural land: it is estimated that in 2023 alone they would have suffered economic damage of around 470 thousand euros. And not to mention the fact that they would put motorists and motorcyclists at risk, considering that in the last two years the road accidents would have increased by 130 percent.
