Circumvesuviana of Naples, few trains and closed lines: it’s a summer emergency

On one side commuters, ready for a difficult summer. On the other hand i tourists, who have been crowding trains for years now and do not hesitate to spend even 15 euros for a ride that takes them from Naples to the pearls of the Sorrento peninsula or to historical sites. In between, the usual problems: the rolling stock that is missing, the dispute with the employees which often results in the refusal of overtime, the staff reduced to the bare minimum despite the competitions (especially in some key sectors).

On the Circumvesuviana side the debate is now heated on the new difficulty that awaits travelers on the line Naples–Nola–Baiano. From July 1st to September 11th will be closed. A replacement car service will be guaranteed, entrusted to Air, but evidently it will not be the same thing: getting to the capital from that portion of the province will not be easy at all. When the line reopens, travelers will have to deal with another problem: the route will continue for San Giorgio a Cremanowhere those heading to Naples will have to change trains, because the Centro Direzionale station will remain closed for three years. Here, in fact, a tunnel needs to be repaired, whose water infiltrations have often caused damage to the station. The Municipality of Naples will take care of it.

The mayors

A complicated puzzle, therefore, which the mayors of the Nola area now want to try to recompose. «An urgent meeting to share the alternative solutions that will be adopted for users who use the Circumvesuviana for their travel» was requested, and obtained, by the mayor of Cicciano Giuseppe Caccavale, president of Development Agency Municipalities Table of the Nolan area. On behalf of the eighteen colleagues who make up the investee company, Caccavale wrote to the president of the EAV, Umberto De Gregorio to request an operational meeting during which they can be made aware of the measures that will be prepared to stem the inconvenience caused to commuters who they use the train for study and work reasons.

The meeting requested by the president of the Agency’s Committee of Commons has already been scheduled and will be held at 10am on Wednesday 22 May at the management of the EAv of Porta Nolana in Naples. «Our territories are all crossed by the Circumvesuviana railway line and there are numerous citizens who use it several times a day. It is for this reason that we need to give certain answers to our communities regarding the alternative offer to rail transport. The meeting will also be an opportunity to take stock of the times and to put on the table the critical issues caused by the suspension of the service”, underlines Giuseppe Caccavale. More will be known next week, but in the meantime the closure of one route becomes a breath of fresh air for the other lines of the Circumvesuviana.

Tourists

That the blanket is short, in Eavit is in fact a well-known fact. There are few trains and for the new ones it still takes a little time. One of them will be shipped to Naples in August, where it will be ready in the Eav workshop in San Giovanni on 5 September. Then the tests will begin with the old one. One of them will be shipped to Naples in August, where if the new railway signaling is tested by Ansfisa, it will then be able to travel. Then four trains a month. Meanwhile, now there are about sixty of them and, with the Nola–Baiano closedshould be sufficient, especially for the Sorrento route, where there is never a shortage of tourists.

Here, according to data provided by Eav relating to last summer, an average of fifteen thousand passengers pass through here per day, while more than that 200 thousand tourists, in 2023, they chose the Campania Express, the train with hostesses on board that skips some stops and takes people to archaeological destinations and the Sorrento peninsula for the modest sum of 15 euros. Last year’s takings exceeded three million euros. The dichotomy is therefore clear: commuters will necessarily have to jump through hoops, while better prospects than the current ones should open up for tourists.

Problems

The stop of Nola–Baiano it will be used for important extraordinary maintenance works, but the other Circumvesuviana lines also require structural interventions, so much so that in the past months there have been scheduled closures, on weekends, precisely to make repairs to the network. Yesterday again a train was more than twenty minutes late Somma Vesuviana and Rione Trieste for technical problems at a level crossing.

And the inefficiencies are found every day. Often the cancellations are also the result of a lack of staff, with train drivers and conductors reluctant to accept the new working conditions but at the same time necessary, since the staff is insufficient and overtime is used. Ordinary stories of hardships that have dragged on for years.
