Tour de France, events continue while waiting for the Grande Boucle

The program of scheduled events continues in anticipation of the departure from Florence of the Tour de France, set for June 29th from Florence. These are the ones scheduled for the next few days: on May 18th a cycle walk in Borgo San Lorenzo, on the 19th at the Florence chair company a theater show on ‘Bartali, good is done but not said’, on the 21st a documentary for the rowers of Florence which traces the history of the Tour starting from 1903, on the 25th the Uisp Florence organizes a night cycle ride in the center of Florence, then a series of initiatives in the Florentine surroundings (here is the list of all the events).

The first step

On 29 June 2024, for the first time in its more than one hundred year history, the Tour De France will start from Italy, from Florence, precisely from Piazzale Michelangelo, and then include two other Italian stages up to Turin, with the border which will only be crossed on fourth day. The first stage, 205 kilometres, will therefore begin in the birthplace of Gino Bartali and Gastone Nencini and will end in Rimini, where Marco Pantani, the unforgettable ‘Pirate’ winner of the 1998 edition, died in 2004.

On Saturday 29 June the Tour de France will start from Florence with a route which, after a ‘visit’ to Viola Park, will go from the Cascine to Piazza della Signoria, where there will be a ribbon cutting and institutional start. On the route from Florence to Rimini the yellow caravan will pass through various locations in the Metropolitan City of Florence, passing through the municipalities of Bagno a Ripoli, Pontassieve, Pelago, Rufina, Dicomano, San Godenzo, and then climb the legendary Muraglione pass and the pass of the three Beeches, and then descend towards Romagna, one of the lands most passionate about cycling.

Economic related activities and expected attendance

For Florence we are talking about an economic impact of at least 20 million euros. For the first stage, between Florence and the various municipalities crossed by the race, 800 thousand people are expected to cheer.
