On Thursday 16 May, the final phase of the national chemistry competition was presented at the Enrico Fermi institute in Modena, reserved for students in the fourth classes of chemical technical institutes and high schools in Italy, now in its 22nd edition and which this year it will host 32 students from across the country, including a student from the Volta institute in Sassuolo.

The Fermi returns to host the final after 11 years since last year Leonardo Gazzotti, a student of the Modena institute, won the final which took place at the Natta institute in Bergamo, finishing in first place overall.

The competition will take place on 17 and 18 May 2024 in the historic headquarters in via Luosi in Modena and, as the school director Stefania Giovanetti underlines «for three days our city will be populated with young chemists, the best of the various Italian regions, who, accompanied by their teachers, will compete for victory in the chemistry competition, promoted by the Ministry of Education and Merit for the valorization of excellence. Being the host venue, we will not have one of our students competing but we are equally excited for this final, which represents a source of great pride for our institute.”

The tender was presented on Thursday 16 May 2024 with the welcoming of the participants and the opening event of the works, in the Aula Magna of the Fermi, which was attended by those who supported the event in various capacities, in addition to the presence of the city authorities , schools, universities and the world of business and trade associations.

The competition will begin on Friday 17 May with the first multidisciplinary theoretical test consisting of 100 questions regarding the three main disciplines: analytical chemistry, industrial chemical technologies and organic chemistry; while the children will be busy challenging each other, the accompanying teachers, as tradition dictates, will be able to enjoy a visit to the historic center of the city and its main attractions. In the afternoon, students and teachers will visit a local company, Tintoria Emiliana, at the end of which they will participate in a gala dinner at the “Secchia rapita” of the Phi hotel Canalgrande in Modena.

On Saturday 18 May the competition will open the doors of the Fermi “chemists’ floor” to growing talents who will continue to challenge each other in the laboratory in a five-hour test. In addition to the prizes provided by the competition, the “Fermi” Institute will award the “Stem girl prize” of two thousand euros to the girl who scores the best score, offered by “Ingegneria Emiliana” with the aim of introducing female students to stem careers, to enhance talents and recognize equal opportunities for everyone. While the children take the tests, the teachers will be able to visit the Enzo Ferrari Museum and other typical places in the Modena capital.
