The city council has approved this morning the PIA 2 air pollution project by Professor Floriano Bonifaziwho will fill the role of scientific coordinator. In this way, the executive formally follows up on the programmatic mandate lines, approved in July 2023, which notes that the results of the first phase of the PIA Ancona project “suggest the need for non-deferrable interventions in relation to the city’s air pollution” .

The update note to the Single Programming Document 2024-2028 plans the actions to be put into practice to operate in a coherent and consequent manner with the PIA assessments. To this end, within the project, three directions have been outlined: monitoring and forecasting of air quality, also through the improvement of current systems, in order to achieve real-time identification of the impacts of pollution, as well as that the projection of future scenarios; mitigation of emissions into the air and the consequent impact on air and soil quality, through the reduction of dust and gases produced by the main polluting factors, including road traffic, and through the redevelopment of city greenery in such a way as to contribute to the absorption of some harmful substances; health adaptation and prevention with profiling studies of the health status of the population, identification of risk factors, improvement of the technical structures dedicated to this and timely and in-depth information campaigns.

The amount of 195 thousand euros has been allocated for the development of the PIA 2 project, divided into three years. The three directions, detailed in a first planning document approved today by the council, will be pursued in collaboration with the local bodies and individuals most qualified to pursue the objectives. As regards the monitoring and forecasting of air quality, this will be carried out in collaboration with Arpam, Arianet and UnivPm (Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Department of Life and Environmental Sciences). The section relating to the mitigation of the negative impacts of emissions will be conducted in collaboration with Arpam, Arianet, UnivPm and the Marche Region. The strand relating to health adaptation and prevention will be developed in collaboration with ARS, Ospedali Riuniti, Inrca and Cnr Palermo.

Taking into account that the project will involve an intersectoral and multidisciplinary activity, for which close coordination with the Administration is necessary, and that the scientific coordinator will have to be supported by the municipal structures for the realization of the objectives, with a second resolution the Palazzo executive del Popolo has established a special structured and inter-sectoral Project Group, coordinated by Professor Bonifazi together with the Coordinator Manager of the Urban and Environmental Planning Area and composed of the General Secretary, Coordinator Manager of the Contracts and Services Area, Manager of the Environment, Green Service Public, Urban Decor, Coastal Defence, Manager of the ATS11 Social Welfare Policies and Coordination Service, administrative and technical staff belonging to the Areas/Services, identified from time to time based on needs.

The project group may also be supported and supported by external professionals. A specific political-technical control room will also be set up for the sharing of addresses and information, as well as for monitoring the Project, chaired by the Mayor and composed of the Councilor for Social Services, Welfare, Integration Policies, Social and Health Policies, Relations with hospital health companies and INRCA, Integrated water cycle, Relationships with Viva Servizi SpA; University Councilor, Youth Policies, Entrepreneurial Development, Night Economy, Civic Volunteering; General secretary; Scientific coordinator of the PIA 2 Project; Technical officer of the Urban and Environmental Planning Area identified by the Scientific Coordinator; Coordinator Manager of the Urban and Environmental Planning Area; Coordinator Manager of the Contracts and Services Area; Manager of the Environment, Public Green, Urban Decor, Coastal Defense Service; Manager of the ATS11 Social Welfare Policies and Coordination Service.
