Orange weather alert in Milan and Lombardy until tomorrow 17 May: more storms are arriving

Showers and thunderstorms will continue to occur in Lombardy at least until tomorrow, May 17th. The territories most affected are those of the Apennines and the southern plain, while in the following hours they will move towards the North-East.

They will fall again showers and thunderstorms in Lombardy, at least until tomorrow. The regional Civil Protection has issued a new weather alert for the afternoon of May 16th which will particularly affect the territories of the Apennines and the southern plain, and then moving towards the North-East. Local accumulations of up to 80 millimeters of rain are expected, while for May 17th the probability of strong thunderstorms drops significantly. The unstable situation that is affecting the whole of northern Italy does not allow us to make predictions about the end of this critical period, therefore the Civil Protection Functional Center will continue to meet to evaluate the various scenarios.

Activates the minimum pre-alarm phase

In the last 72 hours, Lombardy has recorded local accumulations which, in the central-western territories, have exceeded 200 millimetres. Flood events were recorded in particular in the area of the Milan Hydraulic Hub, while the soils in the North-West sectors reached the saturation level.

For this reason, Civil Protection has asked local systems to maintain a minimum attention-pre-alarm phase active. This means that the system will have to be ready for activation for monitoring and enforcement actions to safeguard public safety and reduce risks.

More thunderstorms in Milan, yellow weather alert issued: how long will it last?

The areas of Lombardy with orange alert

Unlike what has happened so far, the showers that will affect Lombardy in the next few hours they will transit more quickly and they will tend to conclude in the evening. These will hit the sectors of the Apennines and the southern plain in the afternoon, and then move towards the North-East in the following hours.

However, another phase is expected for May 17th moderate instability. Thunderstorms, although not strong, may fall in the Alpine and pre-Alpine areas from the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the alert orange remains active, until further evaluation, due to hydrogeological and hydraulic risk in Hydraulic hub of Milan, in the area of the Varesine and Western Lakes and Prealps.
