Messina, Amplified Tourist Experience: Plaques with QR Code and Audio Guides Enrich the City Monuments

New initiatives are transforming the tourist experience in the historic heart of Messina. Five plaques equipped with QR Codes and audio guides, created by the ArcheoClub dello Strait, were recently installed next to the information panels of the monuments of the historic centre. These panels, recently reprinted by the Municipality with texts edited by the Superintendence, are located in key places such as Piazza Unione Europea, Piazza Antonello, the church of Sant’Eustochia, the Monte di Pietà and the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele.

The initiative, which received the support and approval of the municipal administration, was presented this morning during a press conference at Palazzo Zanca. Mayor Federico Basile and Tourism Councilor Enzo Caruso underlined the importance of citizen involvement and praised the ArcheoClub for its contribution. Basile highlighted how similar projects not only enrich the experience of tourists, but also that of residents, who often do not fully know the history of the places around them.

Caruso added that collaborations like this are fundamental to promote the development of the city and enhance its artistic, historical and cultural heritage. He cited other recent examples of synergy, such as the Braille plaques for the blind created by the Messina Lions Clubs and the bilingual Greek-Italian tourist signs thanks to the support of the Hellenic Community of the Straits.

The QR code project was started by Archeoclub Integrated Area of the Strait and represents a further tool for tourism promotion. On the Archeoclub d’Italia website, a space has been dedicated to local offices to equip monuments with QR codes, thus offering additional data and information to users. Now, thanks to these plaques, visitors can access detailed descriptions of the monuments in both Italian and English, as well as enjoying a dedicated photo gallery.

The Archeoclub d’Italia APS-ETS, a moral body at the service of Cultural Heritage, is committed not only to the protection, but also to the promotion and valorisation of the archaeological, historical-architectural and environmental heritage present in the area. Through initiatives like this, the association aims to improve and broaden the accessibility and use of the national cultural heritage.
