Perugia and Fabriano: a connection through the fountains
Perugia and Fabriano by Francesco Gori – Today’s meeting in the Doctorate Hall of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia focused on the theme “Perugia and Fabriano: two fountains and a path of friendship”. This event marked a significant moment in the consolidation of the cultural twinning between the two cities, based on their distinctive historical-artistic fountains.
Starting from the beauty of the Fontana Maggiore in the Umbrian capital and the Sturinalto Fountain in Piazza del Comune of Fabriano, the meeting represented an opportunity to strengthen the cultural ties between the two cities. This twinning, started in 2019 precisely by virtue of the two fountains, led to the proposal of a memorandum of understanding inspired by the similarity between the two works.
The speakers, including Prof. Fabio Marcelli and Francesco Vignaroli, examined the origins and development of twinning, highlighting how the Sturinalto Fountain of Fabriano is inspired by the Fontana Maggiore of Perugia. The Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Perugia, Leonardo Varasano, provided a historical introduction to the twinning, underlining the link between the two fountains.
The path of friendship and collaboration between Perugia and Fabriano began in 2022 and focused on cultural and tourism themes. This connection was fueled by the historical and stylistic similarity of the fountains, with the Sturinalto Fountain being inspired by the Fontana Maggiore. In March 2023, a first meeting in Fabriano started a discussion on various issues, including water, fountains and city museums, paving the way for future joint tourism promotion agreements.
Now, with this second conference, the friendship between Perugia and Fabriano is renewed, with the prospect of a collaboration agreement which is currently being evaluated by the local authorities. The creation of a broader tourist route involving other cities is also envisaged, thus expanding the cultural link between these historic locations.
