SITUATION 7.30 AM. In Lombardy the phenomena have subsided in the last few hours, after the severe critical issues which yesterday, Wednesday, involved around half the region, resulting in even flood situations. During the night the worst of the bad weather moved to the Northeast, hitting Veneto hard and shortly afterwards also Friuli VG. Meanwhile in the Northwest a new, highly unstable impulse is coming into action which will become the protagonist during the day, with intense phenomena spreading towards the Northeast. Conditions in the rest of Italy remain more stable, except for the passage of a certain variability to the South capable of giving rise to some isolated thunderstorms in Puglia.
FLOODING AND CRITICAL ISSUES IN VENETO, BUT THE BACCHIGLIONE LEVEL DROPS. Rain and storms hit the Veneto during the night, causing critical issues especially in the Padua and Vicenza areas. TO Padua a violent storm that began around 10.30pm yesterday lasted until after midnight, transforming many streets of the city into torrents. TO Vicenza many roads were closed, while the Bacchiglione kept citizens in suspense for much of the night, after reaching a level of six metres, risking flooding. After 3 o’clock this night the situation began to improve, thanks to the attenuation of rainfall and the opening of the Diaz canal basin. A few hours earlier the Caldogno canal had already been opened, but still without benefits.
THUNDERSTORMS ARE CONCENTRATED IN FRIULI VG. The bulk of the nighttime bad weather has now abandoned the Veneto but is concentrating on Friuli VG, with showers and thunderstorms, even of strong intensity, moving up from the upper Adriatic towards the region. In just a few hours they brought the rainfall accumulations to almost 70mm in Udinese.
THE RAINS ARE STARTING AGAIN IN THE NORTHWEST. After the night-time lull, the rains are starting to intensify again in the Northwest, with phenomena that have reached western Piedmont since dawn and are intensifying. The flow of the waterways remains under control, even if many are rather swollen. The level of Lake Maggiore is rising, now at 4.79m, or just below the warning level set at 5 metres.
WEATHER FOR THE NEXT HOURS. To the North rain and thunderstorms intensifying in the North-West and spreading during the day to Lombardy and the North-East, where a temporary attenuation of the phenomena is expected in the morning. Intense rainfall is also expected with possible new storms in upper Piedmont, Eastern Liguria, much of Lombardy, then in the evening again in Veneto, Trentino and Friuli VG, while the rain will tend to ease in the North-West. Some showers or thunderstorms expected in Emilia Romagna during the day, but more isolated. To the Center Intensifying cloud cover in Tuscany with some rain in the afternoon in the central-northern areas, sunny elsewhere, except for some rain arriving in the afternoon in upper Umbria and the interior of the Marche. To the South residual variability in the morning over Calabria and Puglia with rain showers running out and with a tendency to clear. Elsewhere sunnier and drier conditions.
